Of the first three dozen cookies baked at a bake shop on a certain day, 1/3 were chocolate chip cookies.
If 1/2 of the remaining cookies that were baked that day were chocolate chip cookies, how many chocolate chip cookies were baked that day?

(1) The bakery made five dozen cookies that day.
(2) Of all the cookies made that day, 2/5 were chocolate chip

(1) The bakery made five dozen cookies that day.

solution:

3 dozen=36,
1/3 of dozen=12,

1.1/2 of the remaining were choco cookies and 5 dozen were made in total, so remaining is 24 and 24/2=12 so total 24 choco cookies made.

Sufficient.

2. 2/5 were total choco cookies made, so 12+x/2=(2/5)(x+36)

we get x and we get half of it and so the total choco cookies made=24.

Sufficient.

Both provide answer independently. option D is correct.

(1) The bakery made five dozen cookies that day: since 3 dozen were already baked, the next 2 dozen would have 1 dozen chocolate chip cookies.
Hence, a total of 2 dozen (24) chocolate chip cookies were baked that day. --------> Sufficient

(2) Of all the cookies made that day, 2/5 were chocolate chip: Let x be remaining choco chip cookies and 2x be total no. of cookies left for the day.
From given fraction above we get, (12+x)/(24+x) = 2/3 => (ratio of choco chip cookies to other cookies).
Hence, we get x=12, and so total choco chip cookies during the day =24. ---------> Sufficient
