SOLUTION

Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value?

(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
(E) E

Since the absolute value of a number indicates the distance of this number from zero, then we need to find a point which is farthest from zero. The farthest point from zero is A.

So, because it doesen't matter if it is negative or positive, hence -2 is the right solution. (A)

Sorry to bump a old thread, but I just completed this problem in the book and considered it relatively easy compared to the others. I guessed it to be a 450-500 level question. Instead it is a 600 level question. Is this really the case?

I tried the diagnostic test at the beginning of the book and could hardly get any questions right and they were 650 level based on information in this forum.

What can I expect on the GMAT? Questions like in the diagnostic section or like those in the Practice Questions to give me a minimum score of 550?

Thanks!

no hard logic behind this, just a pictorial representation but most of us just ignore, i did that initially while practicing in OG but later recovered

Before attacking this question, we want to review what “absolute value” means. The absolute value of a number measures or is the distance that number is from zero on the number line.

Let’s say we are comparing the absolute values of -100 and 90; we’d say that -100 has THE GREATER ABSOLUTE VALUE. It has the greater absolute value because |-100| = 100 and |90| = 90. Notice that 100 is farther away from zero than 90 is.

In regard to this question, we can see that A (notice that A = 2) is farther from zero than any other answer choice. If we were to estimate E, we could say it’s about 1.8. That is slightly closer to zero than A is, because the distance of A from 0 is |-2| = 2.

when it comes to absolute value the easiest way is to ignore the "-" sign for this kind of questions.

2>1.8

Since the absolute value of a number indicates the distance of this number from zero, then we need to find a point which is farthest from zero. The farthest point from zero is A.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but E and A have similar distances from 0. Then why did you select A and not E?

Rajeet123 - on the GMAT, you assume per the instructions that all figures are drawn to scale unless explicitly stated otherwise. Thus, we must look carefully at A and E and whichever is further from 0 is the correct answer. We can see clearly that A points at -2, and E points to near but less than 2. Thus |A| > |E|

Asked: Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value?

|A| = 2
1< |B| < 2
|C|=0
1<|D|<2
1<|E|<2

Absolute value of |A| = 2 is greatest

IMO A
