Official GMAT Practice Test Scoring Issue?

Official GMAT Practice Test Scoring Issue? [#permalink] New post   18 Dec 2019, 05:46
I had taken one official GMAT Practice Test in which I got a score of Score of 600. Quant out of 31 Qs i got 16 incorrect and in Qual out of 36 i got 16 incorrect.

I took another GMAT Practice Test today, in which my Quant was 9 incorrect out of 31, and Qual 13 incorrect out of 36. Clearly I performed much better but it still shows my score at 600.

How is that possible, can someone please explain? Thanks

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. To reiterate, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. So, as you have stated, your verbal score likely dropped because you got some lower level verbal questions wrong.

The algorithm is quite complex to understand. The score depends on many aspects and some of them are- What level of questions you faced (did correct and incorrect), consecutive errors, time taken, how many easy wrong (huge punishment) and etc etc....

It could be that you solved some Medium level questions due to which you got Q31 with 16 incorrect. It could be possible that after many incorrect in the starting set, the algorithm decided your level and continuously gave you easy questions. Yes, you performed better but probably answered only easy questions.

In any case, you need to develop basic understanding of Quant. Q31 is a low score. Focus on your preparation and forget about GMAT algorithm for now. You can also check some online courses which comes with trial versions.

Thanks for your reply, upon checking I saw that my Quant was 48, but Verbal was only 25. I meant out of the 31 and 36 Qs in each section i had gotten those numbers incorrect. But I believe i had gotten the easy questions in verbal wrong which explains the same score. Thanks for your reply.

What does it mean by highlighted part? Are you talking about ''verbal'' part?

Yes I'm referring to the Verbal section in which out of 36 questions i got 13 incorrect, getting a score of 25.

Hi in4192,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. It takes into account a number of different factors - far more than simply the number of correct answers - so you shouldn't be spending your time trying to figure it all out. You'd be better served working on building up your overall Test-taking skills.

Before I can offer you any advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) Are these the only two practice CATs/mocks you have taken? On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
