Months in a calendar will be replicas of each other when the gap between the 1st of both months is a multiple of 7.
Each month in a year (barring February in non-leap years) has 4 weeks + some extra days.
Working back from Jan, 2021:
Dec, 2020 --> 28 + 3 extra days (Total extra days = 3)
Nov, 2020 --> 28 + 2 extra days (Total extra days = 5)
Oct, 2020 --> 28 + 3 extra days (Total extra days = 8)
Sep, 2020 --> 28 + 2 extra days (Total extra days = 10)
Aug, 2020 --> 28 + 3 extra days (Total extra days = 13)
Jul, 2020 --> 28 + 3 extra days (Total extra days = 16)
Jun, 2020 --> 28 + 2 extra days (Total extra days = 18)
May, 2020 --> 28 + 3 extra days (Total extra days = 21)
Hence, John should look at May, 2020.

Yes, calendars are a part of non Math DI and this question is fairly straight forward. You want to know which month of 2020 will align with Jan 2021 when considering days of the week.
Jan 2021 will match up with whichever month gives us complete weeks from its starting till 31st Dec.
Hence simply add the days of the months: 31 (Dec) + 30 (Nov) + 31(Oct) + 30(Sep) + 31(Aug) + 31(July) = 30*6 + 3 = 183 (not divisible by 7)
183 + 30(June) = 214 (not divisible by 7)
214 + 31 (May) = 245 (divisible by 7)
This means starting from May 1 onwards till Dec 31, you will get 35 full weeks so Jan 1 will start with the same day as May 1.
So if May 1 is Monday, Jan 1 will also be Monday and so on.
