On the coordinate plane there are 3 points 𝐮(−1, 1), đ”(1, −3), and đ¶(3, 4). What is the area of the triangle connecting the 3 points?

(A) 10
(B) 11
(C) 12
(D) 14
(E) 13

There is a mathematical formula to calculate area of the triangle in coordinate system, we can use the same to avoid lengthy calculations.

A = (1/2) [x1 (y2 – y3 ) + x2 (y3 – y1 ) + x3(y1 – y2)]
x1=-1 y1= 1
x2= 1 y2= -3
x3= 3 y3 = 4

(1/2)[-1*(-3-4)+1*(4-1)+3*(1+3))
=1/2(7+3+12)
=22/2 =11
