B. Once the archaeologists dug up and cleaned the artifact, they were surprised to find that it was not an antiquity, but rather a modern day object
C. Once the archaeologists dug and cleaned the artifact, they were surprised to find that it was a modern day object rather than an antiquity
D. After the archaeologists dug up and cleaned the artifacts, they were surprised to find that it was not an antiquity, but rather a modern day object
E. After the archaeologists dug and cleaned the artifacts, they were surprised to find that it was not an antiquity, but rather a modern day object

We have 2 verbs, dug and cleaned and thus we need to 'complete' the first one to maintain the meaning. It should be dug up and cleaned... and thus options A,C, E are ruled out.

Option D is wrong for using "it" for plural "Artifacts".

Thus, B is the correct answer.

Here in the above sentence we have two verbs for the same subject and the verb dug is not complete without"up" in this sentence. So the options A, C, and E are wrong
now option D has as prounoun error. here it (singular) is used for plural artifacts. Option E also has the same problem.

So B is the correct answer.

Answer will clearly be (B) for the highlighted errors in other options....

I think "but rather" is redundant. Can someone please explain?
