We have 2 verbs, dug and cleaned and thus we need to 'complete' the first one to maintain the meaning. It should be dug up and cleaned... and thus options A,C, E are ruled out.

Option D is wrong for using "it" for plural "Artifacts".

Thus, B is the correct answer.

Here in the above sentence we have two verbs for the same subject and the verb dug is not complete without"up" in this sentence. So the options A, C, and E are wrong
now option D has as prounoun error. here it (singular) is used for plural artifacts. Option E also has the same problem.

So B is the correct answer.

In this question ans options are mentioned with 'but rather' is it not redundant or is it acceptable to have both ?

I think "but rather" is redundant. Can someone please explain?
