That's awesome. It doesn't need to be said, but best of luck. You will make a great impression by traveling from Japan to do your interview.

I know you must know this and have planned for it, but, BEWARE OF JET LAG! :!: :!: :!: You would not want to show up like a zombie at your one and only interview!

Other than that, congrats and g'luck. L.

Appreciate the confidence vote guys. Yes, jet lag is a MAJOR concern, and in order to (hopefully) recover, I intend to fly over about a week in advance to settle in and conduct a full reconnaissance mission (sitting in on lectures, eavesdropping on group projects, scoping out facilities, mingling with faculty and students, strapping on a pair of depends, etc...), then meet with the Dean of Admissions. I'm aiming to get a better feel for the enviornment and somehow weave that impression in during the 30 minute grilling session.

* As for XYZ, I'd rather not disclose any info yet. Let's just say that it's a relatively small program towards the upper end of tier two (near/elite frontier) and not too popular in this forum. I'm sure most members here, especially those who replied to this post, would view it as a safety school.

What really gets me is that 100s, heck even 1000s of hours of preparation to get this far will all boil down to one 30 minute shot.

GMATT, I have a really good feeling about you. My advice is that don't look at like its just a 30 minute shot. In fact everythig you've been doing for the past year or so has been towards this mission. The interview, the visit et al is but one part of that mission. So far you've been doing pretty good to get the interview invite, so just continue what you've been doing and you'll blow'em away. Also, DO meet with the admissions director, a personal talk with him/her can go a LONG way.

Good luck!

Good job on the interview.

I sound like an adcomm jackass #1, but... "the interview won't make or break you. All of this won't come down to 30 minutes. If it does, then you should question the judgement of the school. (unless of course, they asked your for only 1 or 2 small 200 word essays)"

You'll do great.

Extra advice: 1 day/hour in time difference. Eg: if the time difference is 12 hours, you should arrive 12 days ahead of time for your body to adjust fully. At least that's what professional soccer players use prior to important matches (such as the Intercontinental cup typically held in Japan with teams from Europe and South America).

Extra advice 2: be cool. You would not want to become the over-eager nightmare who feds up everyone at XYZ school before interviewing.

Extra advice 3: talk to alumni /students before hand. They are usually very helpful and can help you in various ways.

Hope it helps. L.

MATT,

Firstly - congratulations. Getting called to interview is a very good sign. I'm sure they will see your willingness to travel as another positive aspect of your interest in the program - which I am sure you have researched well and you know exactly why you want it.

No major tips - the most important thing is to be relaxed, and let the discussion flow naturally.

We're all rooting for you, and go there with all the wishes and confidence and crack it!!

Warm regards,
necro

(someone I PM on the GMAT club list keeps calling me necromanager :)) seriously - I'm NOT managing the dead ;) )

Well gang, I used the sniper approach and by the good grace of god it paid off. I have been admitted at the University of Washington with a partial scholarship. UW is a great campus and, thanks to a $150M donation, will be expanding its facilities significantly over the next few years. UW took first place at the Pac10 case competition, ranks #5 in entrepreneurship, has solid ties with the asian business community in the Pac Northwest, doesn't cost a fortune, and also offers top 10 programs in medicine, law, and several other graduate disciplines.

After all said and done, I thought my chances were slim at best because of a very low GMAT score (the school's mean is a 680 and I scored a 500, then retook for a 640). The key is to really nail your essays and show an unusually keen interest in the program.

This thread may help for those of you targeting schools you might consider to be out of your league: https://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... r+approach

Regarding the GMAT Club party 2007, I am sorry to have missed you guys (especially Pelihu and U2Lovergirl) in SF. Fact is, I decided to cancel my flights to Indiana and SF to spend an extra week with my family celebrating in the Colorado rockies.

Congrats to everbody else on getting admitted to your target schools. Let's keep the energy alive in this forum over these final few months before matriculation.

Thanks Pelihu, and hats off to you for getting in at Duke. Surely, you will also have many more admits coming your way soon.
