One man can do as much work in one day as a woman can do in 2 days. A child does one third the work in a day as a woman. If an estate-owner hires 39 pairs of hands, men, women and children in the ratio 6 : 5 : 2 and pays them in all Rs. 1113 at the end of the days work. What must the daily wages of a child be, if the wages are proportional to the amount of work done?
(a) Rs.14
(b) Rs.5
(c) Rs.20
(d) Rs.7
Assuming equal efficiency of hands among each category (m, w, c)
Given, m : w : c = 6 : 5 : 2
Total = 39
--> Number of m = 18 (6/(6+5+2)*39); w = 15; c = 6
In 1 day,
A child does one third the work as a woman
--> work of 1 woman = work of 3 children
--> 1 w = 3 c
--> 15 w = 45 c
One man can do as much work in one day as a woman can do in 2 days
--> work of 1 man = work of 2 women
--> 1 m = 2(3c) = 6 c
--> 18 m = 108 c
So, 18m + 15w + 6c = 1113
--> 108c + 45c + 6c = 1113
--> 159c = 1113
--> c = 7
IMO Option D
