Hi Folks,

I might be wrong, feel free to correct me but I believe correct answer shall be (E) 7/12.

  • 1/6 of salary for car payment
  • 1/4 more than the car payment for her rent

Given this information:
1/6 + 1/4 = 2/12 + 3/12 = 7/12 of her Salary.

Another approach as you have proposed would be to assume Total Salary = 24, which is fine since is the LCM of 6 and 4.
  • Total Salary = 24
  • Spent for car payment: 1/6*24 = 4
  • Here is where I think it may be incorrect -> Spent for rent: (1/4)*24+ 4 = 10
  • Now total spent = 14
% of Salary Spent= 14/24 = 7/12 of her Salary

Please otherwise explain where am I missing the point guys.

Thank you!

One month Mary used \(\frac{1}{6}\) of her monthly salary for a car payment and \(\frac{1}{4}\) more than the car payment for rent. What fraction of her monthly salary did Mary use that month for the car payment and rent combined?

A. \(\frac{5}{24}\)

B. \(\frac{3}{8}\)

C. \(\frac{5}{12}\)

D. \(\frac{1}{2}\)

E. \(\frac{7}{12}\)
LEt , Salary be 24

Car payment = 4
Ren will be = 5

\(= \frac{4+5}{24} = \frac{3}{8}\), Answer must hence be (B)
