4. Which one of the following is most likely the author’s overall purpose in the passage?
(A) To advise medical schools on how to implement a narrative-based approach to ethics in their curricula.
(B) To argue that the current methods of ethics education are counterproductive to the formation of empathetic doctor-patient relationships.
(C) To argue that the ethical content of narrative literature foreshadows the pitfalls of situational ethics.
(D) To propose an approach to ethical training in medical school that will preserve the human dimension of medicine.
(E) To demonstrate the value of a well-designed ethics education for medical students.
VeritasKarishma GMATNinjaIn option D - What does human dimension of medicine referring to ?
Author purpose is to propose an approach to ethical training but how can we know it will preserve human dimension of medicine.
Please explain.
The "human dimension of medicine" is an umbrella term for multiple human factors of medicine, including:
- "the personal and ethical aspects of doctoring," including "new ways of thinking about and interacting with patients"
- "an understanding of human behavior that reflects a wide array of relationships and readily adapts to various perspectives"
- "moral imagination" and ability to "adopt another person's point of view"
According to the author, an approach to ethical training that includes these factors can result in "
a deeper understanding of human nature that can serve as a foundation for ethical reasoning and allow greater flexibility in the application of moral principles."
In other words,
the reason why the author proposes a new approach to ethical training is that the author wants recipients of that training to be more attuned to the human dimension (as opposed to the scientific or philosophical dimensions) of medicine. In every paragraph, the author explains how the specific changes in training will help preserve specific factors of the human dimension.
I hope this helps to clarify. Remember that when confirming the overall purpose of a passage, you're unlikely to find an explicit sentence in the passage that says, "Here's the purpose of this passage, just like it's worded in the correct answer choice! Enjoy your easy points
!!!" It's ultimately up to us to identify why the author wrote each paragraph, then recognize how those paragraphs fit together into a coherent overall purpose.
I hope that helps!
