In the above sentence, we are talking about the giant hole, and hence the modifier phrase "One of the most astonishing astronomical discoveries of the last decade" should modify "the giant hole" and not "the constellation Eridanus".
On this basis, we can eliminate A and B.
As the non-underline part contains "it", so it should refer to the eligible noun and in our case "it" must refer to "the giant hole".
Also, option D changes the meaning of the sentence.
The core sentence in option E is "the giant hole in the constellation Eridanus, which suggests that it might be a gigantic black hole"
The above sentence makes no sense and has an awkward meaning.
Hence our correct option is C.
Option C, also has a parallel structure, the giant hole in me constellation Eridanus is nearly a billion light years across and is devoid of both matter and dark matter intended to describe the characteristics of "the giant hole"
On this basis, we can eliminate A and B.
