Hey guys,

I am an Indian and have BTech and MBA degrees from IIT & IIM (topmost colleges in India). Currently have 2 years of work exp as a Product manager in a good startup. But I feel that life & opporuntites will be much better in the US and EU regions. Since its somewhat difficult to find jobs in these countries without having visas and connections, I am considering 2nd MBA, which will help me a lot.

I wanted to know the following -

1) Does it make sense? Financially & career wise

2) How difficult is it to get good colleges? Do they consider people with prior MBA degrees?

3) Ideally how many years of workex should I have before doing it?

4) Do recruiters view it negatively?
Hey, avichala2023, you've asked some great questions.

Considering a second MBA can be a strategic move for your career, especially if you aim to enhance your opportunities in the US or EU. Financially, the ROI can be significant, particularly if you attend a top institution that boosts your earning potential. Admissions committees at these schools often welcome candidates with prior MBA degrees and value diverse experiences and perspectives. Ideally, having 3-5 years of work experience is recommended before applying, as it allows you to clarify your career goals and contribute meaningfully to class discussions. Adcoms typically do not view a second MBA negatively, provided you can clearly articulate how it complements your existing qualifications and aligns with your career aspirations.

I hope that answers your questions.

Hi avichala2023
I am Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO. Speaking about a second MBA, yes, it does make sense. I would recommend having atleast 3-4 years of work experience after your first MBA and then maybe apply for a second one. Adcoms are usually a bit critical for a second MBA, applicants applying for a second MBA should carefully highlight strong reasons for the same.

Meanwhile you can focus on strengthening your profile, maybe in terms of your ECs or maybe networking with current students and alums who are pursuing a second MBA from top schools. You can also start working on parameters you think would strengthen your candidacy, like statistically establishing impact at current workplace and building connections with superiors who you might think would write amazing LORs.

avichala2023 - I’ve had some Indian mentees pursue their second MBA abroad. Usually it’s after 4-5 years of their first MBA, in-line with average work-ex across top B-schools. However, if the rationale/ motivations are strong, there can be a valid case for doing it a bit earlier.

Typically, Indian candidates applying for a 2nd MBA have key motivations such as (A) relocating to another geography (B) transitioning to another sector/ function which they can’t do right now (C) adding a strong(er) brand on the resume or gaining access to broader alum network.

Besides these reasons, the 2020/ 2021 (Covid) batch presented a unique situation. A number of people had to do their MBA online/ hybrid those years, though they intended to have the in-person experience.

So the bottom line is: figure out your honest motivations, and exactly if (and how) a second MBA can help. It’s also worth noting that some (particularly US) schools don’t accept candidates with a prior MBA, so it’d be crucial to check the requirements clearly and select the right mix of schools.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Regards,
Arvind
