Let's break down the argument and the roles of the boldfaced portions:

1. "Ethanol is currently much more expensive than gasoline, and there is no prospect that the price of ethanol will decrease."
2. "So, if ethanol does replace gasoline, a major change in transportation habits would be bound to occur in the United States."

The argument suggests that ethanol could eventually replace gasoline due to dwindling petroleum reserves, but this would lead to significant changes in transportation habits because ethanol is more expensive.

- The first boldfaced portion highlights the current cost disadvantage of ethanol compared to gasoline.
- The second boldfaced portion states the main conclusion of the argument, which is that a major change in transportation habits would occur if ethanol replaced gasoline.

Given this analysis, the correct answer is: A

The first boldfaced portion indeed supports the idea that ethanol is currently not a viable alternative due to its cost, while the second boldfaced portion concludes that significant changes in transportation habits would be necessary if ethanol were to replace gasoline.

Hey, I understand that BF1 supports BF2, but I eliminated option A as it states "BF1 is used to support BF2". It surely supports, but not sure if it is "used" to support BF2. sayan640

Background: Ordinary automobile engines can be converted to run on ethanol, which can be produced from corn and other grains.

Arg 1: In the United States, ethanol is currently much more expensive than gasoline, and there is no prospect that the price of ethanol will decrease.

Arg 2: Perhaps, though, as petroleum reserves continue to dwindle, the price advantage of gasoline will diminish and eventually disappear, and ethanol will displace gasoline as the primary automobile fuel.

Arg 3: However, few people in the United States could afford to use their automobiles as they do now if gasoline were as expensive as ethanol.

MC: So, if ethanol does replace gasoline, a major change in transportation habits would be bound to occur in the United States.

Agreed that B2 is the MC, but why can't BF 1 be seen as going against Arg 2, which suggests the price advantage of gas goes down?

Can you please explain why C is not the answer?

C is incorrect because the argument does not oppose the statement about ethanol's high price. Instead, it accepts it as a premise to build its reasoning. The argument uses this fact to explain that ethanol replacing gasoline would require a significant change in transportation habits. Interpretation of BF1 stands incorrect in option C.

Let's suppose ethanol price was $100, and gasoline was $70 - but overtime gasoline will lose its price advantage and also cost $100, which fewer people are able to afford - that's what the argument is conveying. Option A, is in line with this.
