Hi Janielle!
Please clarify what do you mean by "not comparing similar elements" in options A and D? As per my understanding these options are wrong since they lack verb "do" Do you mean this one? Thanks

Hi @carcass/moderators,
"the height that they hover at differs according to species". Isn't this they being referred to birds rather than ospreys. Only choice which has birds closer to they is choice B.
Thanks,

Hi,

In options A and D, Ospreys' hunting is being compared with other birds, which is wrong. As hunting cannot be compared with birds. Hunting is a skill that Ospreys posses and that skill cant be compared with other birds, but, can be compared with the same skill of other birds.

Hope it helps.

Ospreys, as most birds of prey, hunt for their prey while in flight, although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species.

A)Ospreys, as most birds of prey, hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species

B)Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight, as most birds of prey do, although it is uncertain if the height that they hover at differs according to species

C)As most birds of prey do, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species

D)As most birds of prey, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species

E)As most birds of prey do, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species or not

B and E are instant elimination
E whether or not is redundant
B uses if instead of whether
if is used for conditional statements here whether fits the bill.
Option A and D comparing the hunting ability of Ospreys with other prey .Hence they are not parallel
Either we compare action with some action or we compare some noun with other noun
Only C solves the purpose by comparing action of other birds with Ospreys action (i.e hunt)

A)Ospreys, as most birds of prey, hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species
Comparing nouns without the verb, we use "like", not "as". As has to be with a verb. Out.

B)Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight, as most birds of prey do, although it is uncertain if the height that they hover at differs according to species
It is not conditinal sentence. In GMAT we will not use "if" in such cases. It will be "whether". Out.

C)As most birds of prey do, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species
Good.

D)As most birds of prey, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species
Look at A error.

E)As most birds of prey do, Ospreys hunt for their prey while in flight although it is uncertain whether the height that they hover at differs according to species or not
"Whether ot not" - we use such phrase in speaking language. But not in Writing language. It is GMAT. This phrase is redundant. We have to use "Whether". Out.
