Just done with the feedback call. In a nutshell similar reason of Dark_Horse for putting me on waitlist.

She was very nice and friendly. She kept on saying my profile is one of the strongest and I would get into top b-school. She told me to answer 2 essays.

1. Why Darden?
2. Expand more about my career goals and how I plan to achieve them and how flexible am I with post-MBA job geography (given that I am an international applicant and the current political situation of US).

I don't even know how to take this. I am answering the essays with all my heart and leaving it to god.

I really believe that them mentioning that I have a strong profile to get in better schools is a load of bull crap. Why you may ask? If they really believed that I am that good, they would have admitted me and offered me a scholarship dough good enough that would make me think ten times before turning them down. But they didn't. So that just means these were hollow words and have no other purpose except may be pacification.

Possibly yeah. I've no idea what to take of this. I'm just leaving it be.

Re: Calling all UVA Darden wait listed applicants (2019 intake) [#permalink]
Just had my call. I was straight out asked to take the GMAT again. When I pushed for clarity I was told that they had no doubt that I would do well academically but my score is too low as an international applicant (combined with my specific work area and experience). And I have to submit an essay too.

Something I think would all value to this thread:

1) I was informed that waitlisted applicants are usually (90%) of the time re-evaluated in March and April (chances of getting a confirmation before that exist but are low).

2) 10% of the students get offers from the waitlist

A little bummed out. Gonna wait on replies from other schools and then take a call on the GMAT.

Let me start with mine. Let me know if you guys think there might be some concern in this.

Indian Male Engineer , 24 years
UG : B.Tech, Mechanical Engineering (with specialisation in Automotive Engineering) from a top 10 institute in India.
GMAT : 740 (Q51, V39)
GPA : 4.0

Additional Coursework:
- Business Foundations Specialisation (4 courses + 1 capstone project ) , Wharton Online
- Business Analytics Specialisation (4courses + 1 capstone project), Wharton Online
- X- series certificate in Supply chain management (3 courses), MIT CTLx

Work Experience : 4 years (upon matriculation)
Industry : Farm Mechanisation Sector (1.5 years) + Automotive Sector (2.5 years)
Compaines worked for : Escorts ltd. Agri Machinery group, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector)
Function : Research & Development

Part-Time WE: Principal Advisor (Strategy & Operations), Istriwala (Startup)

Extra-curricular Activities:
- Zumba instructor (member of the ZIN community)
- Dancer
- Short film maker (Director, Screenwriter, Editor for 3 films)
- Freelance Graphic designer (KRISH designs)
- Badminton player

Community Service:
- Head of Marketing & PR , Head of Social issues - Vijayawada needs You (Non-Profit)
- Let a team of 22 in a project against child labor in my home town.

Long Term vision : Lead innovations in Farm Mechanisation towards sustainable Agriculture

Short term goal :
Primary - Strategy role in Farm Equipment/Automotive sector (John Deere, Ford, etc.)
Secondary - Strategy consulting for firms specialised in Auto and Farm sectors (Bain, EY, etc.)

Would like to know how much international exposure you have. Have you studied or worked overseas? B Schools love applicants who have rich international experience.

Escorts ltd. Agri Machinery group, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector) - these are respected brands; however these are not top brands. A lot of your competing applicants have worked at MBB, BigTech, PE/VCs, Investment Banks etc. Having a strong Global brand on their resume must have worked for them.

GMAT of 740 is fine but not exceptional.

These could be three reasons for the waitlist.

Concluded my waitlist call yesterday. Basically told me that there was pretty much nothing to improve on my profile and that it will be a waiting game for me. Told me that they know I already have (not true!) or will have offers in hand with my profile. Gave me a writing assignment on "Why Darden".

All in all I somehow believe I am a victim of the MBA admissions "yield" games as they were not convinced that I will end up matriculating if offered an admission.

Only a couple of schools in the same/higher tier have released their final results. How can one already have offers in hand at this point? Must have been weird to hear this. I am with you on this.

Victim or not? It's any way rare for an Indian applicant to be so good for a top tier US B School that they know they can't give a shot at convincing him/her to join even with a free-ride. Maybe one with IIT undergrad (gold medalist), MBB/Big Tech/PE/VC/Front end IB work ex, solid ECs, strong international experience, 770+ GMAT - I don't know. I know folks with exceptional profiles who got admitted to Darden with scholarships and eventually matriculated from there.

Thanks for posting this - did you work collaboratively with your boss on the letter of recommendation?
I wonder if this is a veiled way for them to tell you he didnt do the best job. Quite often people think "oh, he will say good things" but that is NOT the standard we are looking for AT ALL.

I recently posted this in another thread re: recs, "my question is have you fully thought through specific anecdotes you would like them to discuss and have you outlined those for them? Anecdotes where they have worked with you and observed you model the qualities that business schools are seeking? There's always going to be a question about how you stand out from your peers and an example of handling constructive criticism this is virtually guaranteed so I think it would be best to apply your energies on really sifting through the best examples of this that would showcase your most unique qualities. And draft an outline for your recommender which of course they can go a different way.... but I think you're going to have a greater chance of success by guiding them... this has been my experience.

If you did do this, it's possible they just needed to see you from another perspective. I do like to have my clients submit one letter from work and one from a community organization they have led.

I just had my feedback session.

Advice was to maybe get another rec from somebody that is a career mentor rather than a boss. Also said re-taking the GMAT wouldnt hurt as I have a 710 and the average was a 720.
