IMO A

(A) Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression. - Ok, encompasses info given in passage
(B) People who participate in recreational sports regularly are less likely to suffer from emotional depression than people who do not. - NOt given passage
(C) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis. - Passage only mentions about habit forming drugs not addictive drugs
(D) Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs. - Not supported by passage
(E) Playing recreational sports is the best way to reduce the amount of emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs. - Not supported if it is the best way to reduce way to reduce depression

I will go with C here..
As A uses extreme word -"any"
discontinuing use of any drug can cause some level of depression"

But in the argument we have -"most"

"Discontinuing the use of "most" habit-forming drugs causes emotional depression"

(A) Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression.
(B) People who participate in recreational sports regularly are less likely to suffer from emotional depression than people who do not.
(C) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.
(D) Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs.

Stopping use of MOST habit forming drugs causes depression.
Playing recreational sports helps reduce depression BUT SOME amount of depression will exist.

A - Use of ANY habit forming drugs -> I don't like the word ANY there Vs. MOST in the argument but let's keep this for now.
B - This goes way beyond drug addicts, and now says recreational sports are a way to cure all kinds of depression- OUT.
C - Talks about 1 person taking an addictive drug and will suffer from depression even though he plays tennis. Sounds better than A, as it's specific, and A is overarching a little bit. KEEP as well.
D - LOL. Out.
E - Best Way? We don't know that.

Between A & C.
A - overarches a little bit with ANY habit forming drug.
C - provides a specific example, and doesn't overreach.

I will go with C as the answer. Waiting for the OA.

If all of the above statements are true, which of the following must be true?

(A) Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression. -Incorrect because it is using "any" and the passage talks about "most" drugs.
(B) People who participate in recreational sports regularly are less likely to suffer from emotional depression than people who do not. -We can't say this from the passage
(C) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis. -CORRECT. Uses the correct probable language.
(D) Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs. -We can't say this from the passage
(E) Playing recreational sports is the best way to reduce the amount of emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs. -We cant say sports are the best way.

Option C.

The key point to note in option A is "Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression. The passage is not talking about experiencing emotional depression. It's talking more about how much of that experienced emotional depression is likely to stay with the person even after playing recreational sports.

Option C can be directly inferred from the passage. Even after playing recreational tennis, the person who was once addicted to opioid is most likely to suffer from emotional depression.

boiled down to A and C.
There is no pattern in this question. Many inference questions do not have familiar patterns.
A is wrong b/c of "at least"; there is no place in the passage suggesting that drug always causes enotional depressions.

I didn't understand well this one I would eliminate (C) immediately cause it's talking about "addictive opioid" and the argument is about "most habit-forming drugs" so I thought in C there is a generalization. Where am I wrong? Can someone explain me further?

for C though couldn't i argue that addictive opiods might be one of the habit-forming drugs that doesn't cause depression (prompt says MOST drugs as you mentioned cause depression). I agree that A is too strong in that it says people WILL experience depression, but it seems maybe no answer is correct?

GMATNinja wrote:
This passage does not have a conclusion, so don't try to make one up. In fact, the question is basically asking you to identify a statement that could be the conclusion given the facts in the passage. Instead, ask yourself, "What's the heart of the passage?" or "What is the author trying to do?" In this case, the author wants to convey that playing recreational sports can help reduce but NOT prevent the emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of such drugs.

Once you understand the author's purpose, make sure you understand the structure of the passage:

  • "Discontinuing the use of most habit-forming drugs causes emotional depression" - this simply tells us that emotional depression is caused when the use of most habit-forming drugs is discontinued. Make sure you pay attention to that little modifier most. The passage does not say that ALL habit-forming drugs cause emotional depression.
  • "Playing recreational sports can help reduce the emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of such drugs" - Again, pay attention to the language choice. Playing recreational sports CAN help reduce the emotional depression; this does not mean that playing recreational sports WILL necessarily reduce the emotional depression.
  • The author certainly does not say that playing recreational sports can or will ELIMINATE the emotional depression. In fact, the author explicitly states that "some amount of emotional depression is unlikely to be preventable".

Now, if that's all true, which of the following must be true?

Quote:
(A) Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression.

Remember, the passage says that MOST (not ALL) habit-forming drugs cause emotional depression. Thus, we cannot conclude that individuals who discontinue the use of ANY habit-forming drugs will experience at least some emotional depression. (A) can be eliminated.

Quote:
(B) People who participate in recreational sports regularly are less likely to suffer from emotional depression than people who do not.

All we know is that playing recreational sports can help reduce the emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of many habit-forming drugs. We are not told that participating in recreational sports reduces the likelihood of suffering from emotional depression in general. This statement could be true, but it is not strongly supported by the passage. Eliminate (B).

Quote:
(C) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.

We are told that "discontinuing the use of most habit-forming drugs causes emotional depression." Thus, discontinuing the use of an addictive opioid will likely cause emotional depression. Playing recreational sports can help REDUCE that emotional depression, but "some amount of emotional depression is unlikely to be preventable." Thus, we can logically conclude that an individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing a recreational sport such as tennis. Choice (C) looks good.

Quote:
(D) Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs.

Yes, discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs will likely cause some emotional depression, but this does not mean that those individuals will AVOID emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs. Those individuals could develop emotional depression for a variety of other reasons, and we have no idea how likely it is for those individuals to avoid emotional depression. (D) cannot be logically inferred and should be eliminated.

Quote:
(E) Playing recreational sports is the best way to reduce the amount of emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs.

We are told that playing recreational sports CAN HELP REDUCE the emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs, but we are not told that playing recreational sports is the BEST way to reduce the emotional depression. There could be other treatments/activities that are more effective than playing recreational sports. (E) can be eliminated.

(C) is the best choice.

Solving this from POE ;

(A) Individuals who discontinue the use of any habit-forming drug will experience at least some emotional depression.
The stimulus clearly states that discontinuing most habit forming drugs causes emotional depression, but option A used the word any, this can't be concluded because we are not told that all habit forming drugs will cause emotional depression.
Eliminate A.

(B) People who participate in recreational sports regularly are less likely to suffer from emotional depression than people who do not.
Again this is not mentioned in the argument as we are concerned about people who discontinue habit forming drugs and suffer from emotional depression and how they use recreational sports to overcome depression. This option is too general and far fetched.
Eliminate B.

(C) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opioid will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.
Correct, the argument states that even after playing recreational sports, it is likely that individuals who have discontinued the use of addictive drugs may still suffer from depression.
This is the correct answer.

(D) Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs.
This is very much out of scope since it has not been mentioned anywhere in the argument.
Eliminate D.

(E) Playing recreational sports is the best way to reduce the amount of emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of habit-forming drugs.
We are told that playing recreational activities is one of the ways to reduce emotional depression, we are not sure if its the best way or if there are other ways which might be better.
Eliminate E.

So we have option C as the correct answer!

As per your explanation for option C , the most likely phrase allows for the drug to be included in the "most" drugs and hence can be inferred.

Why can't we apply the similar thought process for option D

We know that discontinuing a drug ( from the most category) causes ED. So if a person continues to use it , he/she IS LIKELY( not will) to avoid ED.

The "are likely" phrase in option D makes the option plausible.

As it is a must be true statement, I can challenge the option C by saying that addictive drug is not from the "most " category. But as it is given that there is LIKELIHOOD of it being right , it is plausible.

Now as per your explanation for choice , we are not sure if those individuals can develop depression for some other reason- AGREED . But because there is a LIKELIHOOD mentioned in the answer choice this may well be acceptable. Thus, we can infer D with a LIKELIHOOD

Please share your thoughts on this.. for me both C and D are plausible

Another way of thinking about this is that (D) is an incomplete read of the passage. Here's (D) again:

Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid emotional depression by continuing to use those drugs.

Here's what the passage really supports:

Individuals who use habit-forming drugs are likely to avoid the specific form of of emotional depression (caused by the discontinuation of using those drugs) by continuing to use those drugs.

Even if the drug user avoids the emotional depression that would likely be trigged by discontinuing the drug use, there are plenty of other things in life that could still trigger emotional depression. If we're sticking to what's in the passage, the likelihood of developing depression from drug withdrawal cannot be substituted for the likelihood of developing depression for non-withdrawal reasons.

On the other hand, we can accept (C) as an inference without jumping over any kind of logical gaps or making any logical substitutions. The only extra step we're taking is recognizing that "addictive opioid" is a form of "habit-forming drug." This is all baked into the definitions of "addictive" (which means habit-forming) and "opioid" (which is a drug).

That's why (C) outperforms (D) well. I hope this helps!

would you please help how to understand "most likely" in choice C?

I crossed off C because I read most likely immediately,
most likely means the the percentage of likelihood is most high, but I have no idea where I can infer the degree of likelihood from the argument.

thanks in advance.

I am with you!! It seems like word-play to switch over from habit-forming to addictive. Not sure, whether it is permitted in GMAT. Also, we need to have a prior knowledge that opioid is a drug.

Hi GMATNinja

In C, word "opium" confused me a little bit... Passage says that discontinuing most drugs will cause major depression but we don't really know whether opium is included in these "most" club. What if discontinuing opium doesn't cause depression? wouldn't it harm the logic?
