  1. Story Arc - List down your post MBA goals and map your current skills to your targets. Do think about how an MBA from a premier B-School will help fill the gap.
  2. Be clear on the - "Why now question".
  3. Do articulate how your extra-curricular activities complement your professional skills - defining you as an individual.

  • We would consider this a strong IIMA PGPX profile. Your academics are consistently solid, IIT Kharagpur M.Tech adds academic credibility, and 10+ years at Indian Oil gives you significantly more depth than the current PGPX average of about 7.5 years. Energy & Utilities is also well represented in the current class, so the sector is clearly relevant to the program.
  • The 695 GMAT Focus is already excellent and we would not retake it. The current PGPX batch averages 652 on GMAT Focus, so 695 puts you comfortably above that benchmark. Your earlier CAT 99.78 and GATE 99.4 percentiles further reinforce quantitative ability, although the GMAT will naturally carry much more weight in the current application.
  • Your biggest strength is the scale and complexity of your operating experience. Refinery production, supply-chain exposure, plant commissioning, shutdowns/turnarounds, hydrogen generation, petrochemicals, and supervision of technicians/officers/workers can produce very strong leadership stories. In the application, quantify plant capacity, project value, team size, downtime avoided, safety improvements, cost savings, throughput improvements, or operational risks managed. That will make the profile far more compelling than simply listing technical responsibilities.
  • The main question for admissions will be why PGPX now and what comes next. With 10+ years in a Maharatna PSU, you need a clear transition beyond “general management.” Strong possibilities could include energy strategy, operations leadership, consulting, energy transition, petrochemicals strategy, hydrogen/clean-energy leadership, or broader P&L roles. The sharper and more ambitious the post-PGPX goal, the stronger the application will feel.
  • Overall, we would put you in the competitive-to-strong category for IIMA PGPX, assuming the essays and interview bring out leadership rather than technical depth alone. Sports Secretary and refinery sports-fest leadership add personality, but at your experience level the admissions committee will care far more about professional impact, decision-making under pressure, people leadership, and the scale of responsibility you have handled. IIMA currently requires at least four years of full-time post-graduation experience and a valid GMAT/GRE, both of which you comfortably satisfy.
