A and B are automatically out since they're missing "and"

C is out because "they" doesn't have a referent
D is out for 2 reasons imo: 1) The presence of the semi-colon is not very elegant 2) the sentence ends with "can also be explained....." which is open ended - can be explained by what???

E is the answer

Plate tectonics, the theory that the earth’s top layer consists of large tectonic plates that are moving and colliding, helps explain the formation of mountain ranges, volcanoes, other sizable land features, and the occurrence of earthquakes.

(A) other sizable land features, and the occurrence of earthquakes

(B) other sizable land features, with the occurrence of earthquakes

(C) and other sizable land features; they also explain the occurrence of earthquakes

(D) and other sizable land features, with the occurrence of earthquakes also explained

(E) and other sizable land features, as well as the occurrence of earthquakes

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

This sentence construction problem has a confusing series at the end of the sentence. The correct series needs to show the formation of three things (X, Y, AND Z) as well as the occurrence of something else. Answer choice (A), although it may sound fine, is incorrect as it illogically states that it will explain “the formation of the occurrence of earthquakes”. In (B), there is no “and” before the last part of the series, and nothing logically in the sentence can be “with the occurrence of earthquakes.” (C) is almost correct but lacks the proper pronoun “it” to refer back to the theory of plate tectonics. It properly separates the three things that are being formed from earthquakes but creates a pronoun error in doing so. (D), like (B), improperly uses “with” to attach the occurrence of earthquakes back to the sentence as a whole. (E) does it perfectly: the theory helps explain the formation of X, Y, and Z, as well as the occurrence of Q. Correct answer is (E).
