I would appreciate assessing my Argument Task for GRE:
The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.
"Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades, food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia."
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

The study suggests that headache numbers will decay because of wider use of salicylates in food production industry. But the study exposes many holes those should be looked into to validate the conclusion.
The study summary mentions that salicylates are members of the same family of aspirin, but this doesn't assert that salicylates have to do with headache treatment. If this evedence is proved wrong, the whole conclusion of the argument is undermined.
The study is conducted in Mentia as the text mentions, but the text doesn't mention anything about the time it was cnducted. Is it a recent study or an outdated one? If the study was too old, then we can not depend on it in predicting what will happen next in Mentia. The term "a recent study" would strengthen the argument and gives it a chronological dimention.
Depending on the food-processing company, the argument expects that the number of headaches will decay. Yet the level of civilization and advancement of Mentia and whether they use processed food -is another critical point that was badly mised by the study. If the average citizen of Mentia lives on fresh food and home cocked meals, then the ground under the conclusion of the study is shaky.
Also the study depends on the participants of the study to judge that salicylates help in decreasing the headache numbers. Though the scientific approach would be to examine the material in the laboratory to conclude that it has to do -biotically - with headaches. Even if we accept this deduction, the size of this sample is missed by the study.
My last critic about the study is that it mentions that companies have found another use of salicylates in making flavors. This fact does not imply or make necessity of the effect of using salicylates more in food production. As we know, production process is highly influenced by economic factors and profit. Consequently, companies might find that using salicylates in flavors will not pay back for their cost and resort to the ordinary way of doing flavors.
The study, though, can be proved of sensible conclusion if the study were recent and salicylates are proved to help in headaches. Also the use of processed food in Mentia by the average citizen, if proved, will further support the study conclusion.
