Issue Topic:
Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and to disobey and resist unjust laws.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Laws are created to protect people. Some may be just, while others may be unjust. That’s for the legal system to decide, not the general public. It is important for every individual in society to obey all laws that the legal system has issued.
It is important for all laws to be obeyed because it creates a consistent behavior pattern in society. For example, running a red light is against the law. If someone was running late and felt that they were in the right by running a red light, another person’s safety would be put in danger. Laws are put there to protect the people and it is important for everyone to abide by them no matter the reason. This will ensure that there is no chaos amongst the community.
It is also important for all laws to be obeyed because just and unjust is subjective. One person may think a particular law is just and another person may think that the same law is unjust. In the previous example, some people may think there are times that running a red light is just. People may get hurt because of subjectivity in interpreting a just or unjust law. Therefore, it is important for all laws to be abided by.
There are times where people break the law for moral purposes. The Zimmerman case is a classic example. He was found innocent for taking the life of Treyvon. This caused uproar in many communities and has shown that there are flaws in the legal system. Although there are times when breaking a law may seem moral, we should not because it may promote subjectivity as opposed to uniformity when being judged by the legal system. This will lead to chaos and accusations of favoritism or in this case accusation of racism.
In Conclusion, it is important for people to abide by all laws regardless of whether they think it’s just or unjust. This will prevent chaos and uproar when subjectivity is added into the equation.
Argument Topic:
The following appeared in a memorandum from the manager of WWAC radio station.
"WWAC must change from its current rock-music format because the number of listeners has been declining, even though the population in our listening area has been growing. The population growth has resulted mainly from people moving to our area after their retirement, and we must make listeners of these new residents. But they seem to have limited interest in music: several local stores selling recorded music have recently closed. Therefore, just changing to another kind of music is not going to increase our audience. Instead, we should adopt a news-and-talk format, a form of radio that is increasingly popular in our area."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
The argument has a number of assumptions that may invalidate the author’s viewpoint. The author makes general assumptions without providing elaborative details. These elaborative details might make the authors assumptions not true.
The record stores closing may not be a result of a decline in music interest. The Internet provides ways that you can get music for free. There are free sites and sites that you can pay for that allows you to download music at a substantial price. The convenience and lucrative deals that are provided online might be the reason that record stores have went out of business. The argument could be strengthened if a stat was given on how people in the community retrieve their music or if they listen to music at all.
The author is making as assumption that changing music genre wont increase their audience. It is possible that a community comprised of retired people don’t appreciate rock music. It might be possible that they appreciate music from their generation that does not include rock. The argument can be strengthened if a poll was given to see what type of music the residents of the area prefer to listen too. If rock music near the bottom, it may be safe to assume that changing music genre will increase the number of listeners.
Although news and talk format is becoming popular in the area, it is not safe to assume that following the trend will result in more listeners. These news and talk format stations may already be established and have their regular audience. Unless WWAC can create refreshingly original news and talk format, it will be hard to tear away listeners from their stations that they listen to regularly. It would help if the author would say what type of news and talk format other stations are adopting and how many stations have already adopted them.
In conclusion, the author makes assumptions that may not be true. Further investigating the reason record stores closed down, music preference and elaboration into news and talk is essential in deciding what will help increase WWAC listening audience.
