3-Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
Whenever we open the TV, browse the internet, our eyes are subconsciously looking for the flashing big red word: Breaking News announcing some sort of a big even, mostly about someone that would change our perspective about them. We subconsciously look everyday for a new scandal that would, with one way or another alter our vision of the world around us. Scandals are very efficacious in spreading a certain awareness to people through shedding the light on several problems that would not be easily tackled even by the best reformers.
First of all, I would like to focus on scandals that happen on a very large scale to very famous people. Because the term scandal in itself is relative, it could be a scandal to a family member so it is limited within the familiar range. However, when a scandal occurs to a celebrity or to someone in a leadership position, then it could reach millions of people around the globe, thus sending a certain message. Scandals are like the natural warning to people and one of the main deterrents to stop them from doing acts that are widely socially frowned upon or generally illicit. These scandals can range from drug abuse, to having secret affairs, venality and many other things.
Taking the example of Watergate incident that happened to President Nixon. This incident is by all means a scandal, but if it was taken from a certain perspective, we can deduce that this incident has shown the people of the United States and the whole world, that no president, no matter how strong he or she might be, is fully secured to do what they want. One way or another, the unfavourable act done will be known to the public and will be also known to future presidents. Thus any president would think twice when it comes to the ethics of their presidential campaigns.
Another main point which demonstrates the importance of scandals, is the realism shown to the people. People always see something in celebrities, some as role models, some as highly respected or talented figures, but in some cases, famous people are highly venerated in the society that people forget that the are just as much human as they are, doing the same mistakes, having the same desires. Taking another scandal as an example, which is also in the political world, where scandals have much more momentum and impact in the news: The current French President Francois Hollande. This time the scandal has nothing to do with fraud or unethical behaviour, but it was a simple affair with another woman. Once this was known the public, people were very ambivalent about it, and there were lots of mixed opinions about the fact that the figure representing the French People was having an affair, about, presumably, one of the main role models in Europe, doing an act that it socially unfavourable. Some people were aghast, and others were totally understanding, dismissing this event a very normal and as a private matter in the President’s life. However, despite the public opinion on this matter, this scandal implanted a very important seed in our head: No matter how much we climb up in the social or professional pyramid, the fact that we are humans is never diminished, that no matter how you look up to a certain celebrity we can never forget that they are first and foremost human, who can commit mistakes, just like an average citizen.
Generally speaking, people sometimes do not show interest in this kind of events, claiming that that totally invade the private life of these famous people. Paparazzi incessantly roam around celebrities’ houses, sometimes physically attacking them just to create a fuss about a certain event a creating a scandal that would foment public opinion. Moreover, these scandals could be misused in the form of propaganda to push for some political aims, or to smear someone’s reputation overlooking the fact that the might be clear of any charges.
Scandals are definitely sometimes very controversial, however objectively speaking, they are like a public lesson sometimes, a deterrent to some people and of course it is a constant reminder for the people to stop creating demigods of their idols.
