Hi ladybird66,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your GPA and academic awards are great. Your GMAT is solid too, but could be challenging at the most competitive schools on your list like Kellogg. Your work experience sounds strong; definitely highlight your exposure across functions, ability to team with others and build relationships, and any leadership experience you've had within those functions. In the US, there are not a lot of one-year options, but the most popular ones I hear of are Kellogg, Emory, Cornell, USC Marshall, and Notre Dame.

Good luck!
Kate

Hello,

I am an Indian Female with 6.5+ years of work-ex across Operations, Retail Sales, Consumer Sales in Oil & Gas Marketing in Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. I am a BE (2010) pass-out from a renowned State level University and had an overall CGPA of 8.21/10.00. I am keen to pursue MBA from US (Kellogg - 1 year, Emory, others), Singapore (NTU). Amongst Indian colleges I am looking at ISB, & IIM Bangalore. I am especially keen on 1 year MBA programs. I have given some brief details below.

GMAT : 690 (6/6/50/34)
6.5+ years of work-ex across 3 departments in Oil & Gas Marketing (Indian Oil PSU)
2 University Gold medals for best all round female graduate & best female graduate in all faculties
DAAD WISE German scholarship holder & Tata paid summer internship holder.
B.E. CGPA - 8.21/10.00 from a renowned State level University

Please let me know what are my chances at some top colleges I have just recently written the GMAT, so right now I may not get so much time to prepare and reappear for GMAT as I got to prepare the applications.....
Any leads shall be very very helpful regarding selection of colleges and applications....thanks,

Hi Amulya,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

Your work experience sounds excellent! I am impressed by the team management experience, promotions, and awards. Plus the expertise in clean energy should be interesting to b-schools as that's an area of interest for many other students. All in all, not much to improve work-wise, just keep up the good work and make sure you have a stellar resume and recommendations that reflect those things.

I'm really curious about your career goal to start a food chain! Since it's so different from what you've already done, have you had any exposure to the industry? How will you make the switch? I hope there's an interesting story here, and something you can show to prove a connection to your vision. If not, consider rethinking that (at least for application purposes), or perhaps making that your long-term goal with something in between that bridges the gap.

Otherwise, I think your GMAT is the biggest opportunity to improve. That's going to be really tough at some of the schools you mentioned, especially Ross, but others too where your score is below average. Can you retake? Can you try the GRE instead? In particular, your verbal score will be concerning. So at the very least, make sure your written materials are in excellent shape, and try to have your recommenders mention your strong communication skills.

Good luck!
Kate

Can you please suggest some decent universities where i have realistic chance of admission? Also, what can i do to make my profile better.
I was targeting for Prudue, SMEAL and Ross, AGSM earlier. As i was targeting for a better but the relative low score ruined my plan.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Amulya

Hello Kate,

Thanks for your help.
Really appreciate it!!!

I am in agreement with you that the GMAT score is a point of concern and somewhat relieved to hear that i have a somewhat decent profile. :)

The idea behind the the food chain is that i have a passion for tea and coffee. As MBA jobs pay well, i can start my own business in that field after say 10-15 years. That is why i want to do MBA in operations as my previous work experience is in that. Also, it will come handy in the business venture. But i guess, it will be difficult to convince the shift from energy business to chain.

I will surely keep your suggestions while writing the SOPs.

Again, Thanks a lot. Hearing that my profile is a decent one has surely given me some hope.

Regards,
Amulya

Hi again! That makes sense. Changing industries is totally fine...especially since you plan initially to stay in the same functional area (operations). Just make sure you show them that passion for food somehow through your essays, resume, etc. And also framing up the entrepreneurship goal as more long-term like you say will sound more realistic too. Sounds like you're on a good path there with your goals.

Good luck!
