In the past 20 years, technology and its applications have grown exponentially. While new technologies can often be complicated to learn and adapt to, their function and ability to streamline daily tasks have simplified what we do and how we do it to a great extent.
Developments in communications technology including mobile devices, wireless communication, and computers are linked to simplifying multiple processes needed to run society and our daily lives. For example, a family before cell phones would not have as many ways to keep in touch with their children in an emergency, for a meeting, or to keep an eye on their whereabouts. With smartphones and apps designed to schedule family events, many families rely on these technologies to have real-time interaction, change meeting spots, contact children before and during emergency situations, and can even shut down their children's phones if they are unresponsive to a call. The applications of such technology have made parenting more efficient, thorough, and help provide more security within a family.
Additionally, the widespread influence of the internet, powerful computers, and social media have had a huge influence on streamlining processes in a plethora of industries. A business, such as Amazon, can theoretically package and ship and order within 24 hours of receiving a request due to fast computer processing, changing the relationship between consumer and business and simplifying the shopping experience to where you can completely remove going to the store. The ways we get our news and facts has also become simpler due to an interconnected world provided by wireless communications and computing technology. Before, many people relied on a one or two hour news segment and a daily newspaper to learn about current events and news. Information was limited and slow. Nowadays, you can rely on multiple forms of technology, particularly through social media, to understand world events as they play out on the ground-level, find interpretations of leaders and policymakers, and analyze how the general population may be reacting to these events. Such interconnectivity due to technology, has simplified our ability to gather information quickly to make decisions and understand issues more thoroughly.
We live in an era where new technologies are constantly being improved upon, marketed, and sold to consumers worldwide at a faster pace than we have experienced. The learning curve to use these technologies can make life appear more complicated as one learns to adapt to such fast-paced changes. Acquiring so many devices that have multiple functions such as turning on your TV, controlling the temperature of your home, printing pictures and documents with a click of a button, can also feel unnecessary. However, the rise of such technologies and their constant improvement to make our daily functions simpler has already taken effect and will continue to streamline our lives in novel ways.
