Group #1: Analysis of Argument
The following was used as part of an internet advertising company's appeal to businesses: Furniture Depot employed our internet advertising company to help. Since then its sales increased by 10% over last year's totals. Furniture Depot's success demonstrates how using our internet services can increase your profitability.
Describe how well reasoned you find this argument. In the discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the argument's conclusion. You may also address possible changes in the argument that would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
The argument claims that, Furniture Depot used an advertising company facility and its sales increased by 10% over last year's totals and therefore success of Furniture Depot
shows that by using facilities provided by the company in discussion any business can increase its profitability. Stated in this way the argument fails to mention several key
factors, on the basis of which it could be evaluated. The conclusion relies on assumptions, for which there is no clear evidence. Therefore, the argument is rather weak,
unconvincing, and has several flaws.
Firstly, the argument readily assumes that using internet advertising company increased the sales of Furniture Depot. This statement is a stretch without considering other
factors that may be present for increased sales. For instance, The type of product or services that Furniture Depot produces is seasonal and depends on factor of demand for a
particular season. Additionally, the price of goods or services produces were lowered that may have caused increased demand and thus increasing overall revenue for the
company when compared to last season.
Second, the argument is presented in a way that it claims internet advertising used by Factory Depot was the reason of increased revenue. This is again very weak and
unsupported claim as the argument does not demonstrate the relation between advertising and increased sales. However, the consumer of products by Factory Depot may not
be even frequent internet users and may not have even seen the advertisement placed over internet by the company. If the argument had provided the relation between
consumers and the frequency with which the surf over internet or the kind of websites they visit, then argument would have been more convincing.
Finally, The argument concludes that profitability can be increased with advertising, this claims that using only advertising is a factor that increases sales without taking into
consideration for other factors such as offering special discounts, or improving product quality.
In conclusion, the argument is flawed and therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned all the relevant facts. In order to assess
the merits of a certain situation, it is essential to have full knowledge of all contributing factors.
