The following appeared in a memorandum issued by a large city’s council on the arts:
“In a recent citywide poll, 15 percent more residents said that they watch television programs about the visual arts
than was the case in a poll conducted five years ago. During these past five years, the number of people visiting our
city’s art museums has increased by a similar percentage. Since the corporate funding that supports public television,
where most of the visual arts programs appear, is now being threatened with severe cuts, we can expect that
attendance at our city’s art museums will also start to decrease. Thus some of the city’s funds for supporting the arts
should be reallocated to public television.”
The conclusion of the argument is that since the corporate funding that supports public television, where most of the visual arts programs appear, is now being threatened with severe cuts, the visitors for arts museum would also decrease. The author reasons that in past five years in a recent citywide poll, 15 percent more residents said that they watch television programs about the visual arts than was the case in a poll conducted five years ago and also during these past five years, the number of people visiting
city’s art museums has increased by a similar percentage.
Firstly, author assumes that change in number of residents who watch television programs about the visual arts and change in number of people visiting city’s art museums are directly proportional which is unsound. It is unsound because if users do not watch television programs on arts it can't be implied that users do not consequently do not o to arts musuem.
Secondly, the decrease in corporate funding that supports public television, where most of the visual arts programs appear does not mean that residents don't watch programs. There might be some other reasons such as some losses or a fincancial disaster.
Finally , The author is assuming that users who responded in poll were the sample covering opinions of all residents. For instance, if the residents partcipated in poll might be the residents who watch programs more than residents who did not partcipated in poll.
The argument would be more sound if the author provides some additional info such as past trends where fall in viewership in arts programs has an impact on the musuem visitors and the polpulation coveered in poll were a simulation of complete poulation.
