Hello everyone,
This is regarding a GMAT test I took few months back. Essentially I had my cellphone in my lunch bag, between breaks ate my sandwich, and just as i zipped bag proctor said I had phone (not open, totally off) and couldn't continue. Needless to say, i was visibly upset since I thought I did pretty well on Quant. But now the bigger problem is I have a P for Policy Violation (basically cheating) which is not as bad as an S for Serious Violation but how would the AdComs know? So guys the question is has this happened to you or others who're totally innocent like myself but have still managed to get admission into Top 20 Business School? I've applied to few schools within 680 range, which is what i ended up getting couple months after, but no luck other than an interview at CMU, granted my GPA is only 3.0. I understand I can put this in optional essay but has anyone successfully been able to explain this away and still gotten admission or am I so screwed, life is over and I must move on? I'm asking because even if I get 700 on next try, when AdCom sees the P won't he/she instantly reject me, without even considering this was just an honest mistake? I'd love to get opinions from all, specially those who've overcome this blemish.
Second thing I'd like to discuss is the 3 years study part. This is a huge warning to anyone studying over a year and still getting similar scores. After taking GMAT few times, I was diagnosed last year with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Basically, a normal human stops breathing for 10 seconds or longer less than 5 times an hour. Mild sleep apnea is where this happens 5 to 15 times an hour. Moderate is 15 to 30, and Severe is above 30, and in my case lol was 83 times an hour so atleast 830 seconds of no oxygen per hour, 14 minutes/hour. I was so super dedicated to GMAT couple years back I'd continue to study same thing day after day if I didn't remember it from day earlier but it would totally get me mad. 640 was highest score I'd gotten out of taking test 6 times and just couldn't figure out what was wrong till I had a sleep study done last year and discovered these results. Poor memory / concentration is one of the main things thats adversely affected and I'm only stating this for others who maybe thinking they just need to study harder, as I was in this exact thought process, but this was something beyond my controls. So please get a sleep study done, especially if you have size 18 and above neck, or are heavier than average weight, SNORE A LOT, as its quite possible you may be suffering from same problem and I'd hate for you to waste time if a few non invasive procedures can fix the sleep apnea, which is what happened in my case. Like last few years prior to this procedure I never dreamt. But after getting sleep apnea procedures like palatal implants, RF ablation where they shrink your nasal bone, and reduction of your tongue base, the very first night I started dreaming and its continued, and took only 3 months of study to get my 680 whereas before I was mostly in the 600 average scoring category. The other popular option is the CPAP mask that you must wear 6 hours minimum per night. Hopefully this info can help someone. Also
GMAT CLUB tests helped my quant from 42 to 48 in weeks.
Manhattan GMAT for the rest.
