Need advice on how to improve from 660 to 700+

Hi everyone,

After my previous post, I took the gmat on 29th July 2016.

My score was 660 Q47, V34, IR3, and AWA 4.0.

I need your advice on improving my gmat score from 660 to 700+ in less than one month.

After my last exam, I started to take CR course on e-gmat as CR was my weakest area.

Hi Danuthan,

First off, a 660/Q47 is a strong score (it's right around the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. Many Schools have publicly stated that they still do not factor in an applicant's IR score as part of the application review process, so you likely have nothing to worry about there. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. If you do choose to retest though, then there are some patterns in your score results that point to some specific areas that you need to improve on.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply.

The reasons I need to get a higher GMAT are that there are another 4 people from my company that are applying to CBS in this ED round (their GMAT scores range from 650 - 680), and my GMAT score is 56 points below CBS's 2015 intake average GMAT score.

Also, I think a higher GMAT score can only be beneficial to me.

Hi,

In order to achieve 700 or above, the best combination is Q49 and V35. Hence, you need the extra 2 points to hit 49. Hitting Q49 is not that difficult.

In order to hit 49, you should be strong in PS. For DS, if you do well on CMT, you can easily hit 49. In fact, these hard 4-5 CMT questions are given on actual GMAT. If you get 1-2 questions wrong, you can definitely hit 49. Or, if you get 0-1 questions wrong, you can hit 50-51. So, you should get 3-4 right out of hardest 4-5 questions. This is a big pressure because you have to solve 37 questions in 75 minutes.

However, with our unique approaches of Variable approach for DS and IVY approach for PS, you can significantly save time, and will have 10 minutes to spare on exam. For instance, with our approaches, you can solve questions that normally take 4 minutes in 1 minutes and 30 seconds, and 2-minute question in 30 seconds.

Use this as a guideline. You don’t have to follow it exactly but the structure of the study plan should be the same structure that you take in your approach. This helps to optimize your retention and learning.

As you study, we recommend that you focus on one particular subsection for multiple consecutive days before moving onto the next. You can see this in our study plan where we recommend 5 days on nothing but SC -- before moving onto CR and then RC.
