la-bl = 2 i.e. Distance between a and b on number line is 2
lb-cl = 3 i.e. Distance between b and c on number line is 3
i.e. Distance between a and c is either 2+3 = 5 or 3-2 = 1
lc-dl = 4 i.e. Distance between c and d on number line is 4
i.e. Distance between a and d is either 5+4 = 9 or 5-4 = 1 or 1+4 = 5 or l1-4l = 3
Sum of all values of la-dl = 9+1+5+3 = 18
Answer: Option E

Theory: |a-b| means the distance between the points a and b (irrespective of the signs of a and b)
|a-b| = Distance between a and b = 2
|b-c| = Distance between b and c = 3
Now, b can be in between a and c or a can be in between b and c as shown in the image below

So, distance between a and c can be 1 or 5
|c-d| = Distance between c and d = 4
Now, there are 4 possible cases as shown below

Giving us 4 possible values of |a-d| = Distance between a and d = 1, 3, 5, 9
Sum of these values = 1 + 3 + 5 + 9 = 18
So, answer will be E
