are of shaded region = 2 * s^2/8 = s^2/4
are of non shaded region = area of square - area of shaded region = s ^2 - (s^2/4) = 3s^2/4
the ratio of the non-shaded region to shaded region = 3s^2/4 / s^4 = 3:1
so Answer is D

If the second diagonal was drawn, the entire square could be divided into 8 equal parts.
Of these 8 parts 6 are non shaded and 2 are shaded.
The required ratio = 6 : 2 = 3 : 1

Let x be the side of the squares. The squares form a large square whose sides are 2x. So the area of the large square is 4x^2. Each of shaded areas is half of the small squares. So shaded areas are equal to x^2/2+x^2/2=x^2
Nonshaded area=Total area-shaded area=4x^2-x^2=3x^2
Nonshaded area : shaded area = 3x^2 : x^2 = 3:1 D)
