Online gmat-ES Secure browser

Question

I have installed the ESSecure browser package available on official gmat website in system requirements.
But upon installation if I try opening the app then it throws this error on Mac: 
 “ESSecureBrowser” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

I am really doubtful if this will cause a problem on the test day too. 
If anyone else has had a similar experience, please let me know if this is something to be worried about or not.

Hello, sanyuktas . You need not worry about the issue. It is just an annoying security feature that is built into Macs. (I have come across the same message when I have attempted to download and play a computer game.) There is an easy fix that I will walk you through below. Follow these steps right after you get the error message. Step 1 : Open System Preferences . (You should see the gear icon in the tray at the bottom of the screen... unless you have moved the tray.) Screen Shot 2021-06-27 at 14.39.18.png Step 2 : Select the Security & Privacy icon that is shaped like a house. Screen Shot 2021-06-27 at 14.43.36.png Step 3 : Change permissions under Allow apps downloaded from to allow the software to run. (It goes without saying that you will need your password.) Hi, thanks! This helped. It’s now been installed on my laptop and I can see it on my application, however I am unable to open the application. Is that how it’s supposed (only permitted 15 mins before the exam) or should I reach out to customer care? 
Would love some insights as my test is on 31st!

Hello,  anwesharath . I am glad to hear that the tutorial helped you. To answer your follow-up question, yes, you will be able to open the application just prior to taking the exam, but no sooner. Thus, there is no need to contact customer care.

Hello,

I have the same issue with ES Secure browser, I can not open the app on my mac whenever I click it, nothing shows up. Is it normal? My test is in 6 days and I'm afraid it won't work on test day. Any help??

Yes,  kaloox , everything should be fine  as long as you can see the app —i.e. you have downloaded it and have set permissions to be able to open it, per the earlier tutorial. You are not supposed to be able to open the secure browser until just prior to your test (about 15 minutes before, according to what other members have posted on the issue). Provided your mac meets the requirements stipulated by GMAC™, you should be good to go.

Relax as much as you can, or, at the very least, devote your mental energies to other concerns. Good luck.

Did it work out for you on the exam day?

I am facing the same issue on (2 different MacBooks) so I will have to assume that Scott and Andrew are correct - my only concern is that on a windows computer I was able to open the ES Secure Browser before.

When I click on the ES Secure Program on my Mac I can see that the program starts up in the Activity Monitor, but after 5s it closes down again..

Hi - does GMAC now use the LockDown Browser OEM instead of the ESSecureBrowser? When I download the MacOS browser from the official website, the LockDown Browser OEM installs instead of the ESSecureBrowser. Thanks in advance!

Is something not working or you are just wondering since the names don't match? It is possible there has been a change... there have been some concerns, complaints, and challenges ever since GMAT Online came out. Last Spring (around April) GMAC changed from PearsonVue to Examity as the provider/administrator of the GMAT Online tests. It is possible they have modified the MacOS package.... perhaps someone who has recently used GMAT Online can answer this if they know... but I am not sure you are supposed to be this knowledgeable about browsers/etc. We just became to be better equipped

I totally hear you. It’s good to be paranoid with GMAT online beforehand. You don’t want be paranoid during the test.

Here’s my worst case scenario tip. It is not a good one and I hope you don’t need to use it. However, I have seen a lot of people burned by numerous challenges with lag and interruptions during the test. Ultimately, no matter how much your system was lagging or rather their system was lagging and no matter the number of interruptions, if you finish the test, it’s pretty much a battle to prove that you did not receive a proper test environment. Most people have been able to get to reschedule their test for free or to get any kind of compensation. So if your test is going down the drain and you’ve been interrupted multiple times or it’s lagging beyond reasonable, unfortunately at this time the only recourse you have is to accidentally lose your connection, power or some thing that would result in termination of your test. Only if you don’t complete the test, would you be able to get it rescheduled. It seems pretty unfortunate for me to even have to bring this up but I’ve seen lots of people burned by inadequate testing conditions or badly trained proctors. hoping you don’t have to sabotage your own test 😬

That's good to know, thank you. My only worry is that if the test goes badly due to technical problems, it will still count towards the five (12 month) and eight (lifetime) limit. Even if one gets the test rescheduled and/or reimbursed, I believe it still counts towards the total.

It should not count if it does not end. 😇
This is not a very explicit policy but the logic would be that since you could’ve encountered a technical issue at the very beginning of your test even before seeing any questions, you would be given another opportunity to take the test.

As long as you have not completed it, it should not count. L this policy of course can get changed (but it has been gray so far) and you will need to wait 16 days until you’re able to schedule another test but that’s better than having to wait 16 days to schedule another test and pay for it and have it counted towards your lifetime limit.

At the same time, I would recommend not having to take the test more than twice and basically taking it when you are ready whenever you feel you can’t improve your score anymore and before your score starts sliding down due to inertia.
