Describe your personal and professional goals and the role an MBA from the University of Chicago GSB plays in your plans to reach these goals. (1,500 word maximum) Our general guidelines for the standard career goals essay apply to this document, but the above-average length and the nature of Chicago’s other questions add another strategic consideration. While the second and third essays certainly provide ample opportunity to share information about oneself, there really isn’t much room for narrative. This is a distinct contrast from schools like Stanford and MIT, which ask applicants to recount the details of their actions in several specific kinds of situations across the application essays. With this in mind, Chicago applicants might want to use a portion of their 1500 words in this essay to briefly share the details of some professional achievements and significant experiences. Essay 2: If you could step into someone else’s shoes for a day, who would it be and why? (500 word maximum) The most common trap that applicants fall into when answering this question is writing more about the person whose shoes he or she would choose to occupy than about the reasons for this selection and the way it fits into his or her candidacy. While this can be a fun question with an answer that is sure to be telling, it’s important not to lose sight of what should be the main objective of one’s application: sharing impressive information about oneself that is relevant to one’s business school candidacy. Selecting a prominent figure whose work is in line with one’s professional goals or favorite hobby can be a great strategy for producing an interesting essay that allows for detail about the applicant’s background as well. Essay 3: We have asked for a great deal of information throughout this application. In this portion of the application, we invite you tell us about yourself using a non-traditional application format–a PowerPoint presentation. In four slides or less, please provide readers with content that captures who you are. This approach isn’t exactly revolutionary - Stern’s usual Essay 3 asks for a personal expression that gives candidates complete freedom with content and medium (except for the exclusion of edible/perishable personal expressions) - but it does speak to Chicago’s interest in a candidate’s interests and personality. While all this “white space” might be daunting to some, an easy way to approach this process is to ask oneself a few simple questions. Are there four personal themes to which you would like to devote a slide each? Would you prefer to use the four frames to create a sense of progression through a day, event or activity? We’re hesitant to provide too much guidance given the free-form nature of the task; the best advice we can offer is to think about who you are (and how this might be of interest to the GSB adcom), consider how you could translate this into words and images, and then try it out. Another question: how did people tackle essay 2? Did you treat it like a "hero" essay, like you see qualitites in him that you apply to your own life, or did you treat it differently?

I wrote about a person, being whom for a day could be a valuable experience from the point of view of my career goals (a certain CEO).
I really wanted to write about another person who I genuinely admire (an astronomer and a writer) but when I got down to it, realized I couldn't get past banalities about how great he was and how valuable experience that would be... but not into specifics

I was going to ask the exact question. The ppt needs to capture "you", but between the application form, expanded resume & the slides, I feel there will be some overlap.

After reading posts on Essay2, I am worried I might have chosen the wrong approach. I chose to write about "why I wanted to be in his shoes" rather than "what I can achieve in a day as this person"? I am also using examples from my past experience in this essay.

What are your concerns about the resume template?

Not sure it makes sense to put on the wiki page for GSB. It's not really anything about the school. It's a nice to have when applying.

Ok. This is a question about the dots and commas in the extended Chicago resume. I have attached both word version and the original Chicago pdf. In pdf they put the dots only at the end of each work section. Should we put the dots at the end of extracurriculars, for example? Do we need to put commas or dots in the list of functions in a specific organization? What do you think about it? What are the rules?

I am dazed and confused... as usual :lol:

I think its important to follow the resume format. At the same time I think we can be flexible with specific formatting etc. I have elaborated my extracurriculars as obviously i could not put them in just comma separated format.

Without really knowing exactly what you are talking about, I'd venture you are overthinking it. Commas or dots, whatever. The point of the extended resume, at least from what I can tell, is just to get those 8 things on there - as long as the information is there and its easy to read, I don't think they'll care.

Hi all,

I have a couple of last minute question, before hitting the submit button :
- Is it okay to convert the PowerPoint into PDF ? My presentation is in portrait mode, and I was just worried that they would (for some obscure reason) want to be sure that it is made with Powerpoint
- Should I include significant internships in the expanded resume? I have tons of international experience under that section, and would like it to be visible...

Hi Cereals,

1) Yes. I converted mine to PDF before I uploaded it, and checked with AdCom that it was ok. She said that was fine.
2) I did. I had one post-college significant internship, and I felt it was better to put it on than leave it off. I put significant college internships in the section where you have to list activites during school.
