Hello everyone!
Sharing a list of key reminders that are helping me a lot in my GMAT prep — especially to reduce silly mistakes, avoid common traps,
stay strategic under time pressure, and improve overall accuracy across sections.
Most of these are based on repeated patterns I’ve seen while reviewing 100s of questions — including lessons from official mocks,
error logs, and test-taking strategies. These are things that often cause errors even when you know the concept—
like misreading, rushing through options, or falling for subtle logic traps.
- Always double-check numbers, variables, and conditions before marking an answer.
- If your answer doesn’t match options, re-read what’s actually being asked.
- Write equations from given relationships first; substitute values only at the end.
- Eliminate options with one word off.
- Write equations slowly, one word at a time, watching for units and signs.
- Tiny words like "or" or “some” can change the meaning — read precisely.
- Always highlight conditions like “more than,” “at least,” etc., especially in DS.
- For MSR Qs, skim all tabs first; note values only when solving a specific Q.
- Use simple variables like x, y, a, b to write faster and cleaner equations.
- When x > 0 or y > 0 is given, test both fractions and positive integers.
- Eliminate extreme, vague, or unrelated Verbal answer choices first.
- Always verify if Q wants “could be,” “must be,” or “cannot be” — subtle trap.
- In tables or Q involving ranking, be especially careful not to end up marking the statement which means opposite.
- Always check dropdowns first to save time in DI.
- In Verbal Questions based on a Study or Research , be careful to note the conditions under which the result is concluded.
- In RC, pay attention to the specificities both in passage and in option.
- In Verbal, pay attention as to from who's perspective do you need to answer the question.
- Approach verbal with an elimination mindset to save time rereading options.
- In RC, always cross check with the passage before marking any option.
- Trust your prep — stay calm, focused, and strategic throughout the test.
Hope these pointers will help you too! :)Would love to hear any other strategies or pointers that have been useful in your prep.
