Hi all,

Was wondering how to maintain the balance between right amount of in-depth practice from official questions and right amount of Og questions spared for future. And finally when do you know it’s time to take the test?

I'm assuming future as in, once you are good with all the basics and have solved n number of non official questions, once you're cool with all your concepts?

You want to take OG Questions? Right?

I did something similar.
I tried my best to ignore all GMAT prep Questions so that in official Mocks I'll not encounter any questions that I've already seen.
Generally this inflates the score

Hi Shikhar22,

The right time to practice questions is only after learning the concepts of a topic and after learning the right methodology to solve questions from that topic. For example, you start solving questions from the topic of Prime numbers only after you learn the concepts of that topic and the right methods to solve questions of that topic. You move to the next topic only if you get a decent accuracy in the questions. If not, you go back to the concepts, nullify the gaps and make sure you get it perfectly this time.

And do not focus more on practicing questions. Focus more on the process because GMAT is a test of application of concepts. And to answer your next question, the right time to book a slot for your test if when you consistently get your desired score in the mocks. That's when you know that you are ready to take the test.

Having said that, I can guide you in a much better way if you can provide me a few more details such as:

  • the resources you are using right now
  • your mock scores if any
  • your current study strategy

This information will help me understand your concerns and eventually help me guide you in a better way. You can write back to me here or a better way is to get in touch over a call and discuss the same. You can use the link below to get in touch with me.

Hi Shikhar22,

From your post history, it appears that you've been studying for at least the last 4 months - so if you're now thinking in terms of when you should schedule your Official GMAT (re: maybe sometime soon), then we should take a closer look at how you've been performing on your CATs/mocks. As far as broader practice materials are concerned, there are plenty of high-quality materials besides the OG books - and if your goal is to score at a high level overall, your focus needs to be on honing all of the necessary Tactical skills (and not on parsing out OG questions).

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What brands of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

The primary purpose of a question is to learn from it, not to assess your ability to get it right or wrong. If you save a question for the future and you get it right, okay.... How does that help future-you improve? How does getting a practice question right help you in any way, ever, really??? Great, you got a question right... How is that going to improve your GMAT score?

If you save it for the future and get it wrong, okay, what do you need to learn from that question, and is there *any benefit* to waiting to learn that in the future when you could learn it now???

Now, to be clear, I'm not saying "Do a BOATLOAD OF QUESTIONS RIGHT NOW" because if you do, you won't have time to really learn what you should from each question. But, there's no reason to leave a question for the future just for the 'future's sake.'

I agree. My point was, to get into the groove of things, just before exam, I might need a few spare questions. I have already surpassed the phase of learning the fundamentals. Working on streaks for now , in which I’m using OG questions, strictly, and hence limiting the pool of questions available eventually. My only worry was after reading a few posts by people who completely exhausted their Og resource. So I was wondering if I have to be cautious, or maybe not in that regard. Thank you for your input, regardless.

But.... why?

Why do you need spare questions just before the exam? What is the purpose of these questions? How will getting these questions right or wrong change how you do on the test?

Do you want a doctor to say, "Well, I left a few things for just before the surgery. Maybe I'll know how to do them, maybe I won't, but I left them for just before the surgery so I'll know then if I'm ready or not!"

No... You want your doctor to do what is needed now for the surgery a year from now.

There is literally no benefit to 'leaving a few questions for just before the test.'
