Hi bowhag,
Many GMATers find the Quant, the Verbal or both to be challenging, so you're not alone; in that same way, many GMATers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That Score was just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. To make sure that you're studying in an effective and efficient fashion, it's important to define your practice performances, timeline and goals.
Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How did you score on that first CAT/mock (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
