Janakiraman,

Congratulations

Any advice for the quant section of the test? How hard are the questions as compared to OG-11/GMAT prep? Any areas you feel are neglected on the OG (Remainders definitely are, any others?)

Hi Akaydee

Quants was surprisingly very easy. DS was slightly tricky though we can see thru it. Compared to GMAT prep, I found quants to be easier. Got 49. Think its all about luck at the end of the day!

I had almost the same exact scenario happen. 640 on my GMATprep1 (two weeks prior to test). Then I had 600 on GMATPrep2 (2 days before days). Then I took the real thing and scored 700.

It can be done!!!

You lucked out. However, I don't think most people should go to the test thinking they'll be as lucky :-D

I'd like to believe Performance = Preparation + A little bit of luck.

Janaki, congrats!
I don't think it is all about luck. On exam day, some people keep their cool and come up with their best but some people just press the panic button and loose it.

I just noticed that you studied using OG-11 and not the latest OG-12. I guess it is just as good since more than 60% questions are common in both.

Anyways, you got a great score ! That is what finally matters :)

Luck is always a factor. I scored 710. But could hardly get past 700 in GMAT prep even after retaking it more than a dozen times.

Hi Jankiraman!

Read your post twice as I am also in the similar situation. My brother who also wrote GMAT 2 yrs back says that its tough to get a different score than GMAT Prep. So, I was scared, but after reading your post I see some chance to get through my target. I am consistently getting 49 in quants in most tests.
In verbal made 4 mistakes in first 10, then consecutive mistakes later, landed with 31 in GMAT Prep 2.
Prep 1 = 650 (49, 30)
Prep 2 = 660 (49, 31)
In kaplan I have scored 660,650,710, 690, 680 and MGMAT 650,660,680,640.
Final test on 3rd Sep. Please advice for the last 11 days. And how to do best on the D Day.

Thanks in Advance
Janakiraman
Hi Guys...
Just wanted to post this to tell people that getting low scores in GMATPrep tests doesn't mean you will stay rite there... It aint over until its over!!!
Just want to share my experience here...

IMO, the preps must be used
1. To know what weaknesses u have, and where u make mistakes
2. To get a feel of how the algorithm works.

Reviewing the Prep test is absolutely essential. I found out that the main reason for me tanking the preps was
1. Mistakes in initial questions
2. Getting consecutive questions wrong at regular intervals

@First few questions
There is a general counter-opinion (incl. GMAC themselves) that the first few questions aren't more important than the latter. But, in my experience, it IS important as it sets u up for the kind of questions u ll get in the middle stages. And given that in the end, a cumulative assessment of all questions is made, you will be better off having more 700-level questions in the mid-tier rather than 600-level questions. Also, once u come down to 600L early, u ll have to play the catch-up game, which anyday is not advisable.

@consecutive errors
I really couldn't figure out how it affects the score, I read in a lot of forums that getting consecutive errors - even at the fag end of the test would prove VERY costly. So, never slack in between or the end and go wild-guessing more than 2 questions. It cud drag u down like u never imagined. My first prep had a lot of these - and though i got 8/10 first questions rite in the verbal, I ended up getting 26 - largely due to guessing in mid-RCs.

@General approach
Never think too much about the algorithm, or the first few questions and the consecutive error stuff. Take it question-by-question, one by one. We have no other option but to attempt all questions. Unattempted sections tank heavily! And ofcourse, when u attempt a question, u are trying to get THAT right. So forget what questions u got or wat u might get. Jus ensure the question on the screen is answered right. I got a lot of crazy questions in the middle of QA . So don worry @ dat.

And always remember: IT AINT OVER UNTIL ITS OVER!!! so whether u get 600 or 750 in preps - GMAT is gonna be a whole different ball game!
