I am working in a construction company as an engineer since a year and it is my first job after my engineering. I am contemplating to begin GMAT preparation now.
How do I seriously prepare for the exam while I work? Is it the right time to start preparing for GMAT or should I add a few more years of work experience prior to preparing for GMAT/doing MBA?
Typically, people work for about 3 - 4 yrs before going in for MBA. You can start basic preparation for GMAT right away - start reading - books/magazines/newspapers/online articles. Take out 1 hr every day, either early in the morning or while commuting by public transport or during lunch break or late in the evening ... Point is, you must read regularly. That will give you an edge when you start Verbal preparation.
Also, review your Math concepts (Algebra, Number Properties, Geometry and Arithmetic) from high school books.
You can take GMAT in a year's time. For the next 7-8 months, just work on this pre-prep. Thereafter, check out the various question types in GMAT and then take a diagnostic. Here is a link to a free test:

It will also help you understand whether you need to join a course. 4 months is enough to join a course, take some practice tests and then take GMAT. So in about a year, you should be done with your GMAT. The score stays valid for 5 years so you can apply whenever you feel you are ready.
