Hi vaggar4,

This situation serves as a great critical thinking 'exercise':

You're working under the theory that someone with an MS will earn the same amount of money as someone with an MBA. Is that ALWAYS the case? What evidence do you have to support this idea? Is it a LOT of evidence? You seem to be basing much of this discussion on what one of your friends has told you. There is plenty of actual data online that you can research. To answer your questions, you should go find that data.

This is so weird that MBA and MS CS are earning same salaries.

My Story:
I started preparing for GMAT, Took coaching and gave GMAT thrice - 600, 560 and 610.
Applied to MBA univs and accepted at:
1) Suny Buffalo
2) College of Williams and Mary with 20k$ scholarship
3) UIC, Chicago

I have 5 years of work exp in IT and B.tech. in ECE.

My friends recommendation:
He was also planning for MBA but MBA costs a lot and he thought of giving GRE.
Gave GRE and got into NJIT with 25% scholarship. He had 2 years of work exp.
He has got a job as well and his salary is 80k$. *word censored by forum*.

I am confused because Suny Buffalo is costing me 35lac Tuition fees for MBA and its avg salary is 65k$. My friend did his MS CS in 20 lacs and earning 80k$. He said that MBA and MIS have same salary and MS cost less. So go for MS or MIS. Even after your higher studies, You will be employed at a fresher level. Sad

I have no interest in MS CS. I want to do MIS or MBA.
What should I aim for? Both have good salary.
Should I wait another year and give GRE and apply in MIS or right now choose Suny Buffalo MBA?

Hi vaggar4,

The primary reason why MBAs from SUNY Buffalo have a lower starting salary is because 1. Location 2. Most of the folks gaining admission at SUNY have a very low work ex. (2.1 years average) - compared to around 5 at any other ranked MBA program.

If you want to be associated closely with technology go for MIS, else MBA.

I am kind of in the same boat as you (5 years work ex, admit from SUNY, Weatherhead (scholarship) & Mason (WL))

PM me if you wanna discuss this in detail.

Hi Vaggar4,

Your points are valid to a certain extent but let me try to clear up some of your issues.

Your friend at NJIT studied CS, which is significantly in high demand in NY/NJ area.
He'll also get paid more in NY/NJ as the costs are higher, if you go to Buffalo, the starting salary will be lower b/c cost of living is low.

However let me also let you know if your goal is to be in Technology, you may just want to get MS in CS and go from there, I do know that NJIT offers a dual program and its interesting in a sense that you can do your MS first and then do your MBA a couple years later. Not a know program though for MBA but it is a solid school for technology.

**P.S. I do know that I recommended to you in earlier post that you shouldn't choose SUNY Buffalo MBA.not as a great program and Buffalo is nowhere close to NYC.

Thanks SS. Your points make sense to me.
Nevermind, I have got another great offer from another school with GA :) So i will go ahead with them to cut down the cost. I personally wont go for a school with many Indians. :)

Hi all,
I am in the same confusion of deciding between MIS and MBA. Salary is not a concern for me as such but I do need to go to a school in 2016.
I have a 710 on my GMAT, 7.3 CGPA (out of 10) in my undergrad from one of the top 6 engineering colleges in INDIA, and 2.3 yrs of work ex in an MNC, one of the biggest Smart Phone manufacturer, as a R&D Engineer.
I do not have a problem in being in the tech side but what i really want is to work on the business side of a company.
Please suggest which is better and which colleges can I apply to?

Thanks in Advance

Hi namanvarsh,

I'm not sure if anyone here should be telling you what YOU should do with your career path. If you know the type of job/career that you want to have, then you should be able to research the type of Degree(s) that will help you to achieve that goal. With a 710 GMAT score, you can apply to any Schools that interest you, so you shouldn't hold back when it comes to your applications. Right now, you need to research the various Programs that you think might best match your goals.

Hi,
I totally agree with that, and I have listed down a few course that I want to pursue:
1. TAMU MIS
2. Carlson MS in Business Analytics.
3. CMU MISM
4. NCSU MS in Analytics
5. Georgiatech MS in Analytics.

Could you please let me know which is better in terms of course structure and placements.

Thanks
Naman

Hi namanvarsh,

I don't think that you're going to find anyone in this Forum who can answer those exact questions for you (about that group of Schools/Programs). Many Schools do provide information about their graduating 'classes' though, so you can get a better sense of what percent of graduates are employed, their average salaries, etc. As far as each course structure is concerned, I would bet that the Official website for each program would have that information (and if it does not, then you could contact the School's Admissions Office and get the information that way).

Hey
I have some queries regarding MBA vs MIS . I have completed my B.E in I.T. (2006) from State University scoring 70 %(3.2 GPA), currently having 8.5 years of experience as Business Analyst/Consultant/QA with 2 US MNC's(fortunate 500 companies) . I am planning to pursue my Masters outside India .
I met few counselor's ,one of them suggested me to go for either MIS or MBA in Information Technology as this will give justification to my IT experience plus my aspiration of staying in IT field . My primary aim is to hit management positions in IT and not so interested in HR/Finance domain . They told me there is no point to go for Master's in Computer Science after 8+ yrs of experience.I have not yet given GMAT/GRE and TOFELL/IELTS. I will be writing my GMAT in November.
Can you please suggest me
1. is MIS related to management with IT subjects ? ( saw few universities course and feel that MIS would help me more )
2. What is difference in MIS and MBA in IT? ( since IT/Project management specialization will come in second year with general MBA , is it more focused to IT vs MIS ? )
3. Job prospect of MIS and MBA in IT ?( How do top Employers see 8.5 yrs + MIS vs 8.5yrs + MBA(I.T.) and future prospects ? )
4. If i choose MIS / MBA in which my work experience will act as added advantage ? Which will benefit more? ( MIS will give more justification to my work ex or MBA ?)
6. GMAT score can be used for both MIS / MBA ?
Thanks in advance !!
