Hi,
I want to get an evaluation of my profile for Tuck, Darden, Kellogg, IESE and INSEAD
Background: South East Asian
Age: 23 (24 by Matriculation)
Gender: Male
Designation: Project Development Officer,Real estate development company
GMAT score: 710 (Q49, V38, IR7, AWA 5.0)
Year of Graduation: 2012 3.45 GPA, top 20%
International Experience: Semester abroad (France 2010)
Work Experience: 3 yrs, 44 mos. by matriculation
MBA Objective: Transition from real estate operations/project management background (in emerging markets) to Real Estate investment trust portfolio management.
Catalyst: New legislation for REITs in my home country, possible implementation in the next 5 years
S/T Goal: RE Investment Banking focused on REIT
M/T Goal: Portfolio management associate in REIT
L/T Goal: Portfolio management head in REIT of my home country
Experience:
1. 3 years work experience in project management: residential condominiums and subdivisions
2. Led project teams in executing projects that are below cost and on time (can be quantified)
3. Secured $xx,xxx in tax credits from the government through applying for income tax holiday
4. Ran financial models to identify selling prices of our project relative to cost and market competition.
Extracurricular:
1. Taught basic mathematics for primary school students in urban poor schools for two years.
2. Led community consulting arm in university.
Are my schools within target? Do you have any suggestions to strengthen my profile? I plan to apply R1 this year. Thanks.

I think you've got a lot of strengths in your profile...good GMAT and good GPA, international work experience which is a big plus, 3 years will be a little light but I think you'll be fine, assuming you've had some leadership exposure (whether to people or projects). I really like that your career goals are very focused and connected to what you're doing now. That's great! Your extracurriculars might be a little light, sounds like what you listed is from college, so that may be the only weak area. I suppose if you're looking at very top programs then your GPA / GMAT (while great), are just slightly below average (e.g., Tuck is 718 GMAT, 3.53 GPA). The schools you list seem like pretty good ones though, Kellogg / Tuck / INSEAD will likely be tougher than Darden / IESE. Make sure you do your research on each school's unique culture / community and be able to speak to that in the essays and interviews. I guess I'm surprised Columbia is not on your list...seems like a natural fit given your career goals. Something else to consider!

Being an international student, my main consideration is how quickly and how deeply I interact with my classmates. I feel that living in a college town, away from the myriad of urban distractions, will best allow me to achieve this. Furthermore, the tight knit culture of these schools appealed to me greatly as well.
While I agree that Columbia is very much attuned to Real Estate, I feel quite hesitant to be in New York just yet because of the cost of living and how quickly I could get lost in the crowd. I’m not sure if this is a valid concern but my impression of living in New York is that my classmates would have other friends (outside of MBA) that they have to attend to, which I think lessens the time or quality of interaction of my classmates.
Upon further reflection, I also added Yale and Cornell to my list. My strategy would now be, in order of preference:
Round 1: Tuck, Darden, Yale
Round 2: IESE, Cornell, INSEAD

Sounds like you're thinking about some very important factors like cost of living and community. I can see why schools like Darden and Tuck are top of your list! I think your plan and strategy makes sense. I assume you are planning to do the early action option at Tuck? That is a great option if you are certain Tuck is a top choice school.
