Hi - thanks for this evaluation in advance. I am a US Permanent Resident, Indian citizen.
GMAT: 630 (47 Q, 29 V), 6 AWA, 3 IR [thinking of giving another shot but it will delay my application by 1 year as I am late now]
Undergraduate: Instrumention (India);
MS (Clemson University, SC) - Bioengineering GPA 3.5
PhD (University of Pittsburgh, PA) - Bioengineering GPA 3.9
Work exp. 5 years since PhD
Work experience: in a chemical and gas company in R&D as a Sr. Research Scientist.
Age 35.
Post-MBA goal: Product Strategy in Healthcare/ Pharma
Schools considering: top 20 (I really like UVA Darden. Other choices are Duke Fuqua, CMU Tepper, Cornell Johnson, UNC Kenan Flagler)
A few questions: Can I get a admit with this profile in top 20?

Hi there!
You have impressive GPAs in both your degrees and I think your industry and experience in R&D should be quite interesting to b-schools. However, I see two significant issues -- first is your GMAT which is well below the average for top 20 programs. Especially your verbal score, I'd really like to see that in the mid 30's. Especially for a school like Darden where the case method demands strong verbal skills and class participation. Second issue is your age, which I'm less concerned about since you have 5 years experience which is about average, but that's still something to consider. Would doing a 1-year MBA be an option? I'm not sure if that would allow you to make the career switch right away but I've had better success with older applicants in those programs, as well as Executive MBAs but your profile does not seem quite right for that yet.
The GMAT issue is more concerning though and puts your chances very low for top 20 programs so I think it's worth doubling down on studying now and retaking so you can apply with your best foot forward in Round 1, perhaps even doing Early Decision to demonstrate your interest at schools like Duke and UNC.

Thanks for the info and evaluation. Appreciate your review. I understand it is tough for me to get in with this score. I did not imagine to get that low Verbal score. I was getting 36,37 in my mocks. But, anyway, the fact is that I have a 29 today. I spoke with Booth Exec Admissions person few minutes ago, and he suggested I had a chance with my background and experience. But, he too thought that verbal score is an issue that will get negative score. I am not surprised. I am quite excited about full time MBA because I am interested in looking at the long term gains. I believe my only chance is to wait it out, give GMAT once again and apply for 2017. I hate to wait a year, but that does seem like the right thing to do.
