Last week I took my first GMAT exam and got a 78th percentile. I'm a 22-year-old Italian student (M) , currently attending a Bachelor's Degree in a top 30 university in the UK, first class honours. I have done an 8-month internship in an M&A boutique in a small town in Italy and 3 months in Logistics when I was younger. In March I'll spend 3 months in Montreal to do my curricular Internship as financial analyst in a little firm (20M revenues). Do you think I am a competitive profile for top MiMs like INSEAD, Bocconi IM, or HEC Mim, or should I retake my GMAT and aim for a 700+ score? My goal is a top MiM Program to land a job in strategy. Hi
alereds777,
Your profile has several strengths, but your GMAT score might be a slight hurdle for the most competitive programs like INSEAD, Bocconi, and HEC. Let's break it down:
Strengths:
Strong Academic Background: First-class honors from a top 30 UK university is a significant achievement.
Work Experience: While your internships have varying durations, they provide valuable industry exposure.
International Experience: Studying in the UK and having an internship in Italy demonstrate your international experience and adaptability.
Areas for Consideration:
GMAT Score: A 78th percentile, while decent, might be considered below the average for these highly competitive programs.
Short-Term Internships: The shorter duration of your internships (8 months and 3 months) might be perceived as less impactful compared to longer, full-time internships.
Should you retake the GMAT?
Increased Competitiveness: A higher GMAT score, especially above 700, would significantly enhance your application for these top programs.
Improved Confidence: A higher score can boost your confidence and reduce anxiety during the admissions process.
Recommendations:
Analyze your GMAT performance: Identify your weaknesses in the Quant and Verbal sections and focus your preparation accordingly.
Consider your timeline: Evaluate if you have enough time to prepare effectively for a GMAT retake and still meet your application deadlines.
Explore alternative options: Consider applying to other top-ranked programs like LBS, Oxford Said, and St. Gallen, which might be more forgiving of a slightly lower GMAT score.
Enhance your profile:
Leverage your internship experience: Highlight the skills and knowledge you gained during your internships and how they align with your career goals.
Build your network: Connect with alumni from your target schools and professionals in the strategy field to gain insights and build your network.
Craft compelling essays: Tailor your essays to showcase your unique experiences, career aspirations, and fit with the program's values.
Ultimately, the decision to retake the GMAT is a personal one. Weigh the potential benefits against the risks and consider your individual circumstances and goals.
