Work Experience:
~6 years FT
Job History-
1 year as a Corp Dev Analyst at a European tech firm in their Dubai office
0.5 years as a Financial Compliance officer with the Government of Canada
2 years as a management consultant at a leading business accelerator in Canada (I was there first and only pre-MBA hire in this role),
0.5 years at a portfolio biotech startup as Director of business (secondment from the accelerator)
1.5 years as an Associate Director of Emerging Technology at a midsize international consultancy in their UAE office.
For the past 6 months I have been self employed - I own and operate two mountain getaway resorts, an ornamental plant nursery (horticulture), and have been working as an Independent Consultant on several projects with institutions such as World Bank and a Gold Mining firm.
Extras:
Nominated by a Canadian provincial political party as MLA candidate (Member of Legislative Assembly, equivalent to State Senator) and ran in a high population electoral district. Didn't win but great experience.
Treasurer for 1 year in my university fraternity.
Member of my Uni's Model UN team for 1 year.
Deal advisor to a Royal Office in the UAE
Wikipedia editor and contributor
Volunteering:
Helped raise over 80k for an intl' charity supporting women in developing countries.
Served as a volunteer with Amnesty International at my university and did some fundraising.
Notable Achievements and Awards:
Outstanding Teamwork Award (Government of Canada)
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award (Duke of Edinburgh Foundation)
Raised 2.2M seed funding and successfully managed a subsequent 8 figure acquisition for the biotech firm I was seconded to
Successfully managed a team of 10 employees in the emerging tech division during the start of the COVID pandemic.
Others:
Significant international exposure as I have work exp in 3 countries and can speak 4 languages fluently.
Closely related to a current head of state - not sure if I should mention this on my app as it can come off as bragging or unrelated, but I did gain some valuable government operations and international relations insight from this.
Can code in Python and learning VBA for Excel
I suffer from a genetic mutation which isn't obviously noticeable and has no mortality potential, but it had caused me emotional and mental distress in the past and was a contributing factor to my relatively lower GPA. This is one of the reasons I wanted to go into the bio field (genetics or med school) to potentially discover a cure. However, the material didn't interest me enough and I dreaded lab work, so I got an economics degree right after as that was more interesting to me. Is this something I should mention in the optionals?
Goal -
I love variety and it's difficult for me to work in a mundane job. I consider myself to be a strong generalist, which came in handy while I was at an accelerator as I got to work on startup investments and operations management spanning multiple niches.
Subsequently, I want to pursue a career in Venture Capital and/or Impact Investing (or something that revolves around innovation and emerging tech). My dream job would be working in either a Biotech or AI/ML focused VC fund, but I realize the number of positions in this sector is low.
I'd also be interested in some traditional finance roles (apart from pure IB) such as CorpDev.
Why B school:
Additional exposure to finance and accounting principles in a formal education setting would be greatly helpful. Also, networking.
Targets: LBS, Harvard, Tuck, Foster, Cornell, Oxford, Berkeley
Secondary targets - Alberta, Western (Ivey), Manchester, Georgetown, Rotman, Darden
Thanks!
