Hello,
After reading your article on low GPAs, I would really appreciate your analysis on my profile. I was hoping to apply to at least 1 top 10 university, but am relucatant because of my weak undergraduate academic profile. Currently, I am researching Ross, Darden, Fuqua, McCombs, Johnson, Keenan-Flagler, Rice (Jones). Is this the range of schools I should be looking at? Thank you very much for taking a look at my profile!
- Army Officer, 7 years, currently company commander of 50 person organization that provides various forms of mobile communication to an aviation (helicopter) group of about 3000. Currently stationed in Germany and train participate in multinational training exercises multiple times per year working with coalition partners from a variety of Europian nations. Two deployments to Iraq, steady growth within organization, and consistently in top 10% in reviews. Anticipate this will be reflected in recommendations.
- GMAT: 710, Q47, V42, 5.5 AWA, IR7
- Education Info:
- Nichols College, GPA 2.88, 2006, BSBA Finance. In college, worked 25-35 hours a week and experienced some family altering challenges.
- Webster University, Masters of Arts in IT management, GPA 4.0, Graduate Academic Honors
- Hobbies:Running: many half-marathons, one marathon, and will be running the Paris Marathon this spring. Travel: Been to over 10 countries in the past year, enjoy history.

Hey NCK,
Well it's true that the college and the GPA aint gonna be fantastic, but you did do the best to make up for it by getting a great GMAT, and your military experience as an officer can take you a loooooong way (and probably provide you with some mighty good stories!)
So, you are probably thinking to yourself: Why hasn't Jon answered my question??!!!! where should I apply??!!?!?
Well, to start off, your list is not too bad. I'd say that you can stick in the range of 5-25. That should provide you with some tougher schools, some competitive schools and some safe schools given your background. Basically, start off with your current list and try and add 1-2 more from the 15-25 side of the range, and you should have a well-balanced strategy.

To be perfectly honest with you, I attempting to delicately balance my chances of success with programs that support my goals and that I actually want to go to. I also do not want to apply to more than 6 or 7 schools, because I believe this could lead to a lack of focus on individual applications to schools I immensely want to attend.
I do have one additional question on your recommendation: Do you recommend that I add 1-2 schools in the 15-25 range in order to guarantee that I get into one school, or so I am likely to get into more than one school, give myself options, and have more financial flexibility? I listed the schools above because they are schools that I would be extremely excited to attend and, given this criteria, the only one I would add to the list would be McDonough. Thank you!
