Hi MBAmission,
I need an evaluation of my profile for the schools listed below:
am interested in applying to MBA programs listed and would like to seek advise to see if my profile is suitable for these programs and if/how I should/can improve my profile to get accepted into the program.
Age: 29
Nationality: Pakistani
Undergraduate degree: Business Administration (BBA) from the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi (IBA) (it is the oldest and one of the most reputed business schools in Pakistan with an acceptance rate of 10% and was established by the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania)
Undergraduate GPA: 3.3/4
GMAT score: 700 (I can achieve a score of 730+ if it is necessary)
Work experience: 5 years +
Summary of work experience:
I have 66 months of experience in commercial roles that include supply chain, marketing, and sales. My first job was at a large local MNC where I started of as a Management Trainee in the Supply Chain department (streamlined operations with a large healthcare MNC to provide products in Pakistan), was promoted as an Assistant Brand Manager in the Marketing department (handled a portfolio of USD 10 million).
After 3.5 years in the company, I went to work with my family where I am currently a channel partner for a German MNC. My work involves handling all commercial aspects of sales in Pakistan. I have worked on sales worth USD 20 million alone. The scope of work is much greater than my previous job. I have worked on deals with biggest Government organizations in the country, and handled big projects in finance, legal, operational, and sales. ( I can list atleast 5 big projects alone with various Government and Private sector organizations). Increased YoY sales by 10% and reduced costs by 7%.
Work with the German, Chinese, and American desks of the business on sale origination, and execution.
Extra curricular activities:
- Captain of semi professional football (soccer) club and have been directly involved in the sport since 2010
- Class representative in multiple courses during my time in university
- Cleared CFA level 1 in first attempt
- 10K distance runner (currently down to 5K)
Target schools (in order of preference):
- INSEAD
- Darden
- Rotman
Questions I want answered are:
- Am I a good fit for the business schools that I have stated above, and should I consider other schools?
- What are my chances of a scholarship and how much financial assistance can I generate? (Extremely important)
- I am looking to apply in R2 (January 2020), with the target schools in mind, should I apply in this round or leave it for next year and should I give the GMAT again for this round?
Post MBA goals:
Looking to leverage an MBA degree to start with an associate level position at a consulting firm (MBB) or IB/PE firm. (JP Morgan/Citigroup etc) in the international circuit.

Thanks so much for writing in! It's a little hard to talk about "fit" for the schools unless we know a little more about you and how they came to be on your list. Schools will evaluate your candidacy holistically, and what they learn about your background, motivations, goals and fit with their programs also will be important. There's a lot to like with your candidacy, and your work experience sounds impressive. I like that you have your CFA level I---it's not an easy test and shows that you would be likely to handle the quantitative demands of an MBA curriculum. From what you've written, your GPA is the main thing that jumps out, as 3.3 is low for the averages, but I don't know about the context of what was going on, what your major was, or what the norms are for grades at your undergrad (some schools are tougher graders than others), so on the whole it's a little hard to say, and your CFA might help provide a counterpoint. Your GMAT is right around the average for UVA/Insead...scoring higher would make you more attractive as a candidate.
I'm not sure what your chances are for scholarship at the schools you've listed but Darden and INSEAD both definitely offer generous aid for the right students. I'm less familiar with Rotman's scholarships as I personally haven't worked with clients applying there, though others at mbaMission might have. How much you are likely to get is impossible to say, but generally speaking, the clients of mine who do the best with scholarships have strong demonstrated need and/or very desirable profiles (extra high GMAT, unusual background coveted by the school, strong fit with named scholarship, etc.). In general, I advise clients needing scholarships to do their best on the GMAT and apply broadly to multiple schools with deep pockets, especially ones where your GMAT is ABOVE the class average. Since some scholarships have essays and deadlines, and you think you can raise your GMAT score, for the best possible chance of $, it looks to me like you might want to wait to apply...but it depends. First - check the scholarships by school though and see if there are ones that fit you well with deadlines attached that might push you into the next cycle. If not, then you might not have to wait if you can get a retake done by deadline (?). Don't rush your applications though - the essays will be important for convincing the schools of your desirability!

To answer your points:
- The undergrad school that I attended is in the top two of the country by reputation and they definitely have a stricter grading system than almost every other university in the country. Can't say how they compare with any other country, but I can be fairly certain when I say that they are stricter than some top tier Canadian universities (if that gives you a better picture).
- with regards to my GPA, I understand that it might be on the lower side of the target universities, the only thing I can offset here is A grades in core quant courses and A's and B's in general quant courses.
- The GMAT score is down to under preparation for the test. to achieve a 730+, I need 3 weeks of studying, and while that may squeeze the deadline for INSEAD without it overclouding my judgement or time I need to focus on the essay process, Darden's deadline is Jan 6 (and that might be a little too touch and go here). But if a higher GMAT score can make my profile a lot more attractive, than I think I should try it.
- I want to apply to the rounds this year because of my age 29. And I generally feel that if I don't apply this year then it might as well be another year wasted.
- Thanks alot for the info. on scholarships, I can look into more avenues on how and if it is possible, but I think I should apply to the schools in any case (for which ever round or time), as I don't see a downside of not applying (other than the opportunity cost of the GMAT and application fees).
