Hi! :)

Need help in evaluating my profile.

23 year old,female,currently working in India.
GMAT score : 680
Education :

10th - 94% ( 3.91 GPA )-- Topper of my school
12th - 96% ( 3.9 GPA )-- was among the top 15 in the entire state in class 11
Degree - Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communications from a reputed college in India with an aggregate of 81% ( 3.7 GPA )

Work Ex : 2 years in one of the top IT companies in India,working for a leading client,a fortune 500 company based in the US which is listed well below the top 50.Was recognized as the best trainee during the corporate training phase after recruitment.Have a process based ITIL certification and couple of technology certifications in my area of work.

Extracurricular : Pretty active since school days.Worked as the chief event organizer of national level events conducted during college days.Member and class representative of National Service Scheme,India which chiefly aimed at social service.An active member of the employee's association in the work place.Have a basic proficiency in Spanish language and interested to continue further courses.

Interested in Accounting and finance.

Schools of interest : UCLA,Carnegie mellon,USC,Berkeley,Cornell.

Would also prefer any other good schools in and around California.

Kindly evaluate my profile and let me know of any areas of improvement and other schools which I can think of.

Hi Akhil,
Based on the info you provided, I think you'll be competitive with the programs you mentioned. Your background is strong and you will stand out as an Indian female from the IT industry. Your GMAT is a little on the low side for UCLA, Berkeley and Cornell, but I think your strong UGPA offset that issue. The only schools on the west coast that you have not mentioned are: Stanford (this will be a big stretch for you), and the Univ of Washington (you'd be competitive here). Don't know if you knew it or not, but both Columbia and Wharton have part-time MBA programs in the Bay Area of Cal.

Not sure why California is the focus, but I'm guessing it's because of your background in tech and the focus of tech in Silicon Valley(?). If that's the case, there are other great programs that have a strong tech focus that are not in the Valley, but still carry prestige. MIT, for example, is very well regarded in Silicon Valley...I should know since I've lived here for many years!

Hello,

With the given information, I would suggest you to

1) Retake GMAT and score in the range of 700+ since you represent the most competitive pool (indian engineers). You have to have a reason to differentiate yourself from rest of the peers

2) Take some more initiatives at work, and try to acquire some unique exposure and skills (with some leadership exposure). With these changes, you will have a lot to talk about when you write your stories

And If you think you can not do two points mentioned above, you can take a CHANCE, but for taking chance also, you must present very STRONG essays.
