Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your profile, and congrats by the way on the stellar GMAT score. Quick q on that note-- was the 740 before you applied in 2011 or after?

You have a lot of positives in your profile including strong, extensive and varied work experience, strong GMAT score and academics, and lots of extracurriculars (though be sure to demonstrate in your discussion of all those activities, what you are truly passionate about, in order to ensure you don't just sound scattered with your interests).

You are right in that the 8 years of work experience by the time you enter would be longer than average, and some admissions committees might want you to really make a case for why you need the MBA now, at this point in your career, and to ensure it will truly help you in your next steps. It will be of utmost importance that you convey that clearly in your application essays and interview. You also want to be sure you are making a case for why each specific school is best for you.

Your school list sounds appropriate. Not sure how many applications you completed the last time you went through this process, but keep in mind it is an intensive process to tailor each application to each school, so you don't want to sacrifice the quality of your apps for quantity. Most applicants apply to 3-6 schools, more than that can be tough to really do a great job with. Just something to keep in mind. In terms of re-applying, if you are very interested in that program I would recommend it, as it shows your dedication to that program, but you'll want to clearly highlight what has changed since your last application, in the essays and interview.

Good luck with your upcoming decisions and career!

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your feedback on my profile!

I applied with the same GMAT score in 2011 last time and had applied to 5 schools (Haas , Tuck and ISB - Rejected without Interview, Tepper and McCombs - Rejected after Interview - Yes! I messed them up).

However, the experience about Pre-sales/Consulting and also the Project Management is added only in the past two years, after my previous application attempts. Before that, I feel that my profile was quite ordinary (not that its extra-ordinary now :) ). I feel I have made quite a progress in the past two years, which I would like to highlight in the apps this time around.

I am mostly finalizing : Kelloggs, UCLA, Duke and I am fine to add a couple more into the list. (Leaving INSEAD for Jan , in case nothing works out and INSEAD with an internship seems to be a better option as well). Do you feel that I am aiming too high?

Which other schools do you suggest me to look at? , considering that my goals will be tied to Technology/Consulting and Innovation. Being an international student, I am also a bit concerned about applying to schools that do not offer loans without US Co-signor (Ex; Ross & Tepper - otherwise I would have surely applied there). I feel that I am under-qualified to apply to higher ranked schools like MIT (also applying from an Indian IT Male Pool doesn't make it any better) . Any feedback on this would be really great! Thanks a lot for your time!!

Hi there,

It's great that you've made progress since your last application and are prepared to highlight that when you apply.

Remember that the story you convey about how your past leads to the MBA, which leads to your future goals, will be critical in your decision as well, as will convincing the committee that you NEED the MBA for those future goals (especially since you'll have extensive work experience), that NOW is a great time for it, that you've improved from your prior application, and that XYZ school is the best for you. ;)

Your school targets sound appropriate. Have you researched Carnegie Mellon for technology? Here's a BusinessWeek article on top b-schools for technology: https://www.businessweek.com/articles/20 ... technology

Finally if you are interested in spending some additional time speaking with a consultant for free where they can talk through your background and specific profile and challenges and so on, mbaMission does do free 30 min consults, see https://www.mbamission.com/consult.php if that is something you are interested in. Just thought I would share that with you as you get ready to re-apply. We also have free guides and resources at: https://www.mbamission.com/resources.php

Good luck with the process and keep me posted on how it goes!

Hi Jen,

Thanks again for your guidance. I had applied to Tepper in 2011 and was rejected after interview. I am planning to reapply there again.
I was quite surprised to see Cornell in the Top 5 for the list of Technology schools. What are your thoughts on this?

Regards

One interesting thing about that ranking on BusinessWeek is that it was based on student responses on how well they felt their program covered technology. Students tend to be tough critics about their education so schools that rank well likely are doing something right in that area. Cornell does have a strong program and at times is noted for IT strengths, and apparently their students rate it highly in that area. Rankings by specialty do vary more so than general rankings as there are a lot of variables. Plus all top MBA programs strive to have strong education in key areas including technology, along with finance, entrepreneurship, etc. Another program known for IT though not on that list is McCombs, not sure if you've considered them.

Keep doing that research and working on those re-vamped applications! :)
