Masters Degree: Industrial Engineering Thesis based from a public school in Texas (GPA: 3.89/4.00)
Experience
1 year in a global fortune 100 integrated oil and gas company in Pakistan. Think Shell, Total, BP
4 years in a fortune 500 oil and gas service company in the USA. Think one of the top three in oil and gas service domain
Plus Point: Two out of the four years in the USA spent in a management role responsible for a team of 15 to 20 engineers.
Drawback: Just recently laid-off due to the extended downturn in the oil and gas industry. Besides finding decent employment as soon as possible, what else can be done to turn this into a story that shows a winning attitude and emotional resilience.
Extracurriculars
Vice Captain - University Field Hockey Team (Undergraduate)
President - Science Society (at the Undergraduate School)
This was way back in 2008. Have not been involved in any major extra-curricular activities since then besides being an SPE member.
Post MBA Goal
Short-term: Management consulting in the energy domain in North America (both, oil and gas, and renewables).
Long-term: Strategy and business development related leadership role in the same domain, but in the developing economies in South America, South Asia, or South East Asia.
Target Schools:
First Priority: Harvard, Columbia, Booth, INSEAD, Kellogg
Second Priority: UCLA Anderson, UC Berkeley Hass, Duke Fuqua, UV Darden, UM Ross
Please give your opinion on how will my profile fare that these schools.
I shall be very thankful.

Dear Ammar,
Overall you have a very good profile, but with some weaknesses. Let's have a look at things:
Your strengths:
- Your management experience of large teams
- Your international experience
- Your prior employer and industry
Weaknesses:
- Male Pakistani
- Undergrad GPA
- Unemployed
- Weak ECs/Volunteer work.
The biggest issue will be the fact of your unemployment if this remains the case, and I hope by the time of application you will have found something, because it can significantly weaken your profile. Other than that, and especially since you are currently unemployed, I would very much suggest you RIGHT NOW find some ECs/ Volunteer work that appeals to you. Better late than never!
As for your school list, I think you may be reaching a bit high. Top 10 schools (HBS, Columbia, Booth, Kellogg) will likely be out of range for you. You have a few too many weaknesses in your profile (To give you an example, two years ago HBS accepted 2 candidates out of 1000 with a GPA less than 3.2), so I would reconsider things there. INSEAD should still be within reach as even if it is a top school, as they tend to be flexible with GPA and GMAT.
Other than that, if your intention is to remain in Oil/Gas, the two Texan schools - McCombs and Rice having fantastic placements in this industry (as you can imagine) even if they are "lower ranked". So can be great "safe school" options that will actually be amazing places to go to.

Thank you very much for some great advice. Actually I am still working and my last day at work will be in mid March. However I was informed about the layoff earlier.
I am moving to Canada in late March and volunteer work will be the first thing i will engage myself in besides finding a full-time job.
In addition to the extra curricular activities listed, I was the treasurer of two other student clubs and a member of the graphic design and layout team of the annual magazine at my undergraduate school. I do not know if that adds a little more weight to the ECs as all these activities are from college days.
Also, unfortunately I can't change my undergrad GPA, but fared better in quantitative courses, did pretty well in grad school, and scored a reasonably high GMAT score. Is there anything else I can do to improve this aspect of my profile?
Given that I find decent employment at least three months before the R1 applications are due and get involved in community service (will prefer teaching kids in some under-served area; I have done that in the past) as soon as possible, what would be my chances at schools that are a tier below the top 8 schools. Think Ross, Fuqua, Darden, Yale, Anderson, Cornell, Tepper?
