Hey there!
So first things first - congrats on that totally awesome GMAT!! wow! That is high :)

Second, forget about applying this year because 1. that boat has sailed 2. you lack the necessary work experience anyhow.

But DO start preparing for next year!

Can you make top 10? As a female with an amazing GMAT, you should for sure try, although I would definitely say you should add 2 schools from the 10-20 range to your list. Other than that you should be thinking now about what you can do to a) improve your profile until next year b) get in contact with students and alumni from the schools you are interested in and c) visit the schools, if possible.

Best,
Jon

Hey Jon,

What do you think the ideal work experience would be? I already have 38 months work experience as of today. I'm aware that it is almost impossible to apply to R2 of B Schools now but I thought I might give it a try. The deadlines are due in less than a week. I know I sound almost ridiculous but I am almost done working on my essays, recommendations and stuff, and I have a feeling I'll be wasting an year if I don't apply now. :(

Will applying this year hamper my chances next year? I mean do re applicants have lesser chances than applicants?

Also, what do you suggest I do in order to improve my profile?

Regards,
Swetha
Dear Swetha,

Soo first of all, actually you do have enough experience. I kind of read your pst wrong, I just realized. But still, the second thing remains true. Deadlines are in FIVE days! And there's no way to get a good application in in that time. There are SOME schools that have deadlines a bit later, but not top schools.

One option you will have is to apply to European schools in the January Intake (INSEAD mainly), if you are interested. Other than that, you will likely have to wait anyway, because Round 3 is not one I recommend applying in if it can be avoided.

Best,
JF

Hello Jon,

So I'm back after almost 6 months with the same question: How do I go about selecting the schools I must apply to and in which rounds?

I'm a 25 yr old Indian female, 760 GMAT, 115 TOEFL, 39 months work experience.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey there!
Good to hear from you again.
Well, to select schools is easy when you are going for Top 10, because basically all schools are good for all industries. You want to build your school list by looking at two things:

1. Which schools send people to the jobs, employers and industries you are looking at?
2. What about your personal and professional preferences? What type of learning? What weather? Location? etc. etc. etc.

And using these criteria you cut down the list. Like I wrote really any Top 10 or even 15 school is good, and the rest is up to you.

If you write me a bit about your preferences and your current thoughts I can likely direct you further,
Best,
JF

Hello Jon,

As of now, I plan to work in an Investment Bank post my MBA. But honestly, I might change my mind in the future. In fact I want to do an MBA to explore various options and find out what's best for me. And as you rightly pointed out, almost all of the top 10-15 schools are good for all the industries.

I believe in learning by doing, so a School that employs a practical approach to learning, and engages students in group activities, case studies, simulation exercises and real life scenario analysis will be a good fit for me. As for the location, I prefer Schools that are on the East Coast.

So, what I'm really looking for is a School (preferably on the East Coast) that offers plenty of options to explore, and is really diverse (which most of them are!!). I'm currently considering applying to

1. Stanford GSB (Because I personally think it's the best B school and though I know it's a stretch, I feel it's worth giving it a shot)
2. Columbia Business School (Because of the location, brand name, job opportunities and the Value Investing Program)

I'm also considering applying to (some of) Wharton, Kellogg, Fuqua, Haas, Anderson, Stern but I really need help here. I want to know how many schools I must apply to and in which rounds. Also, which Schools can be considered to be safe for me and which ones are a stretch. Your advice will be greatly useful in devising an app strategy.

Regards
Swetha

Dear Swetha,
Well if you apply to CBS and Stanford, you can add a few more East Coast schools. Tuck if you don't mind not living in the big city, or Duke for a more all-rounder. Otherwise for Finance, Wharton, Booth, Sloan, and NYU are all excellent choices. You can think of Anderson, Tepper or Johnson as safe schools. My suggestion would be for you to select about 4-6 schools from the Top 15 (which would include one safe school). Anyhow, you also don't have to decide everything now, but you can already get started on Stanford and Columbia,

Best,
JF
