Hi all,
I would appreciate any insight or feedback on my profile. For a bit of context, I applied to a few schools in Round 2 of 2018 and received all dings without interview. I am hoping to apply again in Round 1 for the 2019 year to a new list of schools. Please let me know if you think my profile is inadequate for these schools. Or if you think of any schools I should add to the list! I do intend to work with a consulting firm to better refine my story and essays.
1) Basic demographic info: 28, White, Male living in the United States. US/UK citizen.
2) Educational background:
Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering for top 15 public university.
Undergrad GPA: 3.18 (my engineering GPA is a 3.4, but unfortunately I did not give my other classes the appropriate amount of focus. This includes a C in financial accounting and B- in an economics class. I have one withdrawal on my record from Differential Equations where I received an A- next semester.). I used my optional essays to offer a mea culpa that probably wasn’t satisfactory for this shortcoming.
GMAT: 750 Q48/V47, IR7, AWA6 (only attempt)
I do not particularly want to retake the GMAT. I could probably improve my Quant, but hopefully the ChemE helps to alleviate any concerns with the “low” Quant score? Do you think there would be significant value in retaking?
3) Work experience: All work experience below is as part of a Fortune 300 commodity manufacturer (not Oil & gas).
1 year - Project Manager for a portfolio of 13 projects totaling around $11M. Talking points around leading contractors, financial evaluation of projects, and other standard construction/engineering project management stuff.
3 years - Project Engineer for a $200M+ plant conversion project. This role is somewhat more difficult to explain. I was still responsible for contractors but I was not the full project manager. Essentially, my actions were reviewed by the PM but I solved and implemented many of the field problems.
1 year - Process Design leading multiple teams of engineering contractors for the preliminary and detailed design of $100M+ of environmental projects across multiple facilities.
4) Extracurriculars:
Vice-Chair of an engineering society for one year. This role was responsible for organizing an industrial technology conference with 350+ attendees from a variety of countries and companies. All aspects from gathering technical papers, securing sponsors, and logistical coordination. I was able to reconfigure the conference layout to increase profits. All profits went to funding STEM education at surrounding schools and to scholarships for undergrads.
Currently chair of aforementioned society with approximately 80 active members. Responsible for managing and helping board officers with their initiatives.
Speaker on a technical paper at aforementioned conference.
I was also captain of multiple intramural teams each year in college and in leadership of engineering society during undergrad. I usually do not include this in my applications since it’s during undergrad.
Edit: Some work experience in Spain and England while in high school. I generally don’t mention this because I do not see where it would fit into the application.
5) Short/Long term goals: My short term goal is to pursue a role in strategy consulting. (Really standard MBB answer that I feel doesn’t stand out.) Long-term I would like to pursue an endeavor in sustainable energy either as a start-up or by joining a company after a period of time in consulting. I was under the impression that there was at least some visible path to this route, but perhaps not?
6) 2018 schools (dings w/o interview): HBS, Wharton, Kellogg(personal favorite. Did interview), Columbia, Duke, Sloan, and Booth. Many of these were stretch schools, so the dings didn’t hurt my morale TOO much (though one interview invite would’ve been nice to have!)
2019 schools: Kellogg(reapplying), Ross, Darden, Cornell, Tepper, Anderson, and Emory. My intention is to make campus visits to at least Ross, Darden, and Cornell.
If you have any questions or if I’ve left anything out, let me know. I appreciate your time and any feedback or thoughts you can give!
