Background: I applied to Michigan Ross in the first round for the class of 2018. Was invited to interview, interviewed on campus, Waitlisted at the decision date, and then after providing an update, was denied on the round 2 decision date.
I work in Medical Device sales for a very large orthopedic medical device company for about 3.5 years. I have about a year's worth of volunteer experience at my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I took the GMAT twice, 700 Q49 V37, and then 720 Q47 V43. Went to Wayne State University (somewhat no name) in Detroit Michigan. Majored in Biological Sciences. Graduated with 3.16 GPA (weak point on top of a weak point). Worked up to three jobs at once while going to school full-time undergrad in order to not take loans and graduate with zero debt.
The interview at Ross was a little dicey. I think it went OK at best. I wasn't as prepared with specifics as I would have liked to have been (lesson learned). My essays were very well thought out and very well written. I opted to allow my recommender send in the recommendation (ross only requires one) blind, but I trust that this was a strong point in my application. I think my resume was well written and very strong. Also on interview day, (I'm not usually like this) I didn't take many of the opportunities that I had to introduce myself to the ADCOM. I think overall, this sheepishness did me no favors when it came time for them to review my application. With literally no impression made, how could they think back and look at me favorably?
In the time since my first application to Ross, Three co-workers and I have broken off within our organization and started our own sales team. We now have greater responsibility and ownership of the business which we have grown over the past year. I have taken two classes at a local community college. Microeconomics, and Accounting. These classes are just finishing up at the end of this month. I expect to finish with a 4.0 in micro, and a 3.7-3.8 in accounting. Could someone please let me know if this Accounting grade is going to be more of a problem than an aid?
Also, I plan on retaking the GMAT. I believe if I can really focus for a few months, I can get my quant back up to 49-50 and my verbal up for a total of 760-780. Is this time well spent?? (i figure, Im not really doing anything else outside of work, and I can cancel the test attempt if it is lackluster).
Going into the next application year I know that I must "cast a wider net" in terms of applying to more schools. I really have always had my sights set on Ross though. Its the school that I fell in love with years ago, and really the only place so far that I can see myself earning my MBA.
Any feedback is valued and greatly appreciated!!
Thank you,
NB
