Thanks!

Hey dude,
So things look pretty good so far! You have a great GMAT, very good grades from an excellent if not Ivy school, and what seems to be good work experience. I write what "seems to be" only cause I am lacking detail, not cause I think it's not great.

What I CAN see is that your international experience, for an American candidate, is pretty exceptional. But I can't tell where you stand in terms of progress, promotion, leadership, achievements, and those will of course influence your chances.

What I am missing though is a little bit of breadth. Okay, you have that Engineers without Borders thing which is good, but what ELSE are you about? Who are you as a person? What passions and interests do you have? What communal, volunteer, social or religious affiliations and activities?

Your profile will certainly be stronger if you make an effort to show how it is broader and deeper.

I think you can pretty much stick to Top 20 programs, and depending on the things I mentioned above, your profile will be either stronger or weaker... but in all cases, good :)

The one thing I don't entirely get is how you came up with your school selection (i.e. why you chose those schools and not others)

But otherwise, looking miiiiiighty good, sir!

Best,
Jon

Hey Jon,

Thanks for the feedback! Just to address some of the gaps you mentioned:
- I did not go into much detail about my job, but I have received executive praise via multiple awards and the highest possible score during all my reviews. Although not a perfect measure, I have seen a 25% increase in salary in the 3 years I have been working (linked directly to performance). My responsibilities have grown every yar and continue to do so.
- Engineers Without Borders is a major commitment (upwards of over 20 hours per week of volunteer labor [mostly int he form of project planning and design]), and I spent 2 weeks of my personal vacation time this year and out-of-pocket cost. My chapter implemented one of the largest development projects the organization has ever seen, and our President is actually speaking at the national conference. It has successfully provided water to a community of around 800 people vi a solar-powered pumping system, preventing the women and children from having to walk about 2 miles up and down a large hill with ~20 liters on their back. This type of activity is what I see myself doing in the long-term after gaining a strong foundation in the private sector.
- I love to travel, and almost refuse to go to the same place twice (up to ~15 countries now). I love searching for the best wines and coffee, and challenge myself in the kitchen to perfect my techniques and maximize flavor. I am also very in-tune with my Italian heritage - I make homemade wine, can/pickle vegetables, and cure meats with my father and family. I am an avid runner, and plan on my first marathon this year, having never been an athlete throughout school. All these interests and characteristic have a common theme between them - I have passion for the things I enjoy and am trying challenging myself / exposing myself to new things. I believe I also carry this over to the workplace.

I came up with my school selection based on location and type of concentrations. I would like to stay in the DC to Boston area, and each school has a unique characteristic that would draw me. I am especially curious about Carey because it is an unaccredited school at a top-notch university (Johns Hopkins). I think their program would fit me well, but I am a little hesitant due to lack of pedigree.

I have an idea how to thread all of this into an application, just didn't get into the details here. Is this the stuff you were referring to? Is it all worth mentioning?

Thanks again!

Hey there!
So no problem dude! Lots of good stuff in your post here. The salary increase is definitely some sort of goodness, as are the responsibilities. Make sure that stuff comes out clearly in both your resume and your application (the schools love to SEE progress). The Engineers without Borders certainly sounds like something bigger than I thought, so that is great in terms of some community service, but still I would be looking for additional things that make you stand out, or give breadth to your profile.

I understand a bit your school choice, and if you know people at these places, it can certainly be a very good additional argument to explain your application there. Yet at the same time I wouldn't underestimate the value of pedigree!

All the best,
JF
